♪ Interview with Melissa Brooks ♪

Q What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this song?

A I want listeners to feel inspired to accomplish anything they want to and not feel like anyone will stop them. Girl Riot is about fighting against social norms and carving your own path. This song represents any struggle women feel because they are women. I want this to empower them.

Q For that , how did you try to make these songs? Please teach me from the perspective of music , lyrics and artwork.

A I wrote this song in my living room at home while watching The Runaways movie with Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Halfway through the movie, I got inspired by how badass and fearless these girls were in a male-dominated industry, and I picked up my guitar and wrote the song. The lyrics are pretty straight to the point and tell a story of girls teaming up together and rioting against what society expects women to be. This Girl Riot era is blue. I chose blue because people always link girls up with the color pink, and blue is the opposite. This represents how women are constantly going against what the world thinks verses what girls actually are like. The cover shoot was all blue-themed and I got to throw handfuls of glitter, ate flowers, spray painted a wall, and wore a skirt made of needles.

Q Who inspire you in these days?

A Gwen Stefani in the 90s and the Spice Girls

Q What is the news from you to the viewers？

A We are going on a west coast tour this January, and also will be releasing a new EP early next year! Hopefully, Japan real soon :)

Q　 この曲で一番伝えたいことはどんなことですか？

A リスナーがやりたいことは何でも成し遂げられるようインスパイアしたいと思っているわ。それから、彼らが立ち止まったりすることがないようにもね。Girl Riotは、社会の規範に対する戦い、そして自分自身で道を切り拓くことについての曲なの。女性であるがゆえに悩んでいる女性を代弁してもいる曲でもあるわ。私はこの曲で彼女達に力を与えたいと思っているの。

Q そのためにどこにこだわっていますか？

A この曲は、家のリビングでThe RunawaysというKirsten StewartとDakota Fanningが出演する映画を見ている時に書いたの。途中を過ぎたあたりで、男性が支配する社会にいるむちゃくちゃで怖いもの知らずのガールズにインスパイアされたの。それで、ギターを持ち上げて、曲を書いたわけ。歌詞はとても真っ直ぐで、ガールズが一緒のチームになっていくっていうストーリー、社会が期待する女性らしさに対しての反乱ね。Girl Riotの時代はブルーなの。人々はいつだってガールをピンクと結びつけがちでしょ。ブルーはその対極にある。それで私はブルーを選んだわけ。このことは、社会が考えるガールは実際にはこのようにあるべきだという流れに、女性達が絶えず反抗をしていくという表明なの。アートワークも、ブルーをテーマにしたわ。ひとつかみのグリッターを投げつけ、花を食べ、壁をペイントするの。それで針のスカートを履いているのよ、

Q 最近ではどんなアーティストに影響を受けていますか？

A 90年代のGwen Stefani。それとthe Spice Girls。

Q ニュースを教えてください。

A 来年の1月からウエストコーストでのツアーが始まるわ。来年の早いうちにはEPを出す予定。本当に日本に早く行けることを願っているわ！！
