Just saw the writing techniques ask from last night! I shall pick.... "How do you choose chapter and/or story/book titles?"
Continuing my blog of shame, here is another long overdue answer. Hi Nash, thanks for playing...
#12 How do you choose chapter and/or story/book titles?
Sometimes, I use a line I scrapped from the final draft - something related to the story, but not repetitive - like Copy, Rogue Leader and Good Riddance.Ā
Word play is one of my favorite things. If I am writing something with a lot of humor to it, I want the title to reflect it. I love puns and geeking out over double meanings and jokes - Itās a Dying Industry, One for the Tropey Case, I Before E, Except After Dean, Turned Topsy-Turvy
Other times, I will do google searches related to the theme of the story and pull a line or a quote that is relevant - The Sky is Empty, Crapulous, and By Someone Who Knows How.Ā
Then, or course, thereās the kind of generic using lines from the song or prompt method - Try to Understand, 5, 6, Grab Your Crucifix, With or Without Control, Something Quite Atrocious, Got it Bad.
And then last, there are times where I want something descriptive and catchy and none of those methods seem to work, so I just go with how I would describe the fic to myself - Their Rare Indulgence, Strategic Mothering, That Special Someone.
I sometimes put way too much thought into the title, but I know that for me, thatās often a huge selling point for a story. So, thereās that.
