Salome Karwah waits in her sister’s bedroom while family members demand money from her would-be husband as part of a Liberian wedding tradition known as bride price. Like her sister, Josephine, Salome is also an Ebola survivor. As they deal with the grief of losing their parents to Ebola, the sisters face a backlash from some community members who fear that survivors are infectious. But life goes on. More than a year after being discharged from the Ebola treatment unit, Salome is marrying James Harris, a fellow Ebola survivor.

Josephine Karwah has check ups every six months as part of the largest ever study of Ebola survivors. More than a thousand survivors are being monitored in Liberia by local and American researchers. What the researchers discover about post-Ebola syndrome could help the estimated 17,000 West Africans who survived Ebola.

SMELL NO TASTE, Liberia—Josephine Karwah was seven months pregnant when she walked out of the Ebola treatment unit in Liberia in 2014. She lost her mother, father, aunt and uncle to the virus but Josephine survived. She is one of an estimated 17,000 Ebola survivors in West Africa who walked out of quarantines and Ebola treatment units and stepped into an uncertain future.
