As world governments pursue policies to secure food sources and humanitarian organizations work on the ground to deliver aid, there are individuals like @chefbjdennis are making a direct impact in solving the long term problem of food insecurity. Our soul and health has diminished in quality do to the over production of commodity crops. Improving agricultural biodiversity through sustainable practices may help alleviate food insecurity as well as soil erosion. Industrial agriculture relies solely on monocropping, in which one genetic type of crop is planted on large tracts of land, while sustainable farms frequently plant a genetically diverse array of both crop type and species. Monocropping increases crop susceptibility to both pests and diseases. Entire fields of corn dried up before even forming kernels this past season which is part of the reason some of my neighbors finally started to understand what I’ve been trying to explain to them these past few years. Enhancing biodiversity can protect communities from food insecurity associated with both crop loss and decreased yield. These seeds that @chefbjdennis collected during his travels are going directly to our seed garden so that we may produce more seeds to share with our community. Included are Trinidad Flint acorn, Mississippi Silver Hull Peas, Sea Island White Rice Peas, African White Sourghum, African Guinea Flint Corn, and Trinidad Hill Rice. I’m especially excited about the rice. It’s a variety that I grew up eating which has long since disappeared from our landscape. You can grow it like any other plant in your garden without the need to be planted in watery fields surrounded by dikes. Here in Haiti, it was called ‘diri solèy.’ @chefbjdennis, I thank you from the deepest corners of my heart 🙏🏽 #growninhaiti #chefbjdennis #foodsecurity #biodiversity #nogmos #nopesticides #noherbicides #seeds #seedshare #seedsaving #westAfrican #redrice #wildrice #trinidadhillrice #africanwhitesourghum #africanguineaflintcorn #mississipisilverhulledpeas #foodsovereignty #chef #thankyou https://www.instagram.com/p/BnRHJUVnUBf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1w9rg82vc8le4
