Can you give me information on how to properly care for a string of buttons??? I had one awhile ago that was planted in a mug and it became floppy and weak. Eventually it died. My friend just gave me another one for Christmas and I would love to keep it alive!! This time I have it planted in a pot with drainage holes. Past that, what should I do?? How often do I water it and how much? Thank you!

you’re definitely a HUNDRED times ahead of the game now that you have them in a pot with drainage holes. i figure i water my string of buttons’s about once every two weeks in winter, sometimes more than once a week in summer. this is an estimate, of course. at this point i usually just KNOW when my plants need to be watered! keep an eye on it — the leaves will become less firm and slightly wrinkled when it's thirsty.
they like bright, direct sunlight; but DO like to be protected from harsh afternoon sun. a gritty, fast-draining mix of 50% soil and 50% perlite, coarse sand, or gravel is best. if kept indoors an unobstructed western window is best, or a southern window with a curtain across it during those summer afternoons.
