Hey I've been having a really really hard time with all the US age ID bills going on so I just wanted to ask. If these laws get passed and everything, What is the process we would need to go through to get rid of them? Thank you in advance and for all the work you do here❤
Sure I'll give you some tips! 💕👍
(I have talked about this in the past especially if you scroll down on my page ,but it definitely needs to be restated! I will retell some of my tips I have made in the past on other posts I have made!)
- Stay within the law: follow local rules on permits, public space use, and safety. (I would also do it in a place that normally get a lot of traction/attention like a public government building. A lot of peaceful protesters are doing this nowadays!)
- When protesting keep a clear, specific message gets more traction if you are gonna take this route!
- Build your numbers! You can get the message out on social media or in other online spaces about a protest that might be local or even nationwide if it happens.
- Coordinate with established groups (civil rights orgs, advocacy coalitions, etc. Are ALL important to have! I would research the ones that allign with your values! ) These groups already know how to mobilize and engage media.
Working through elected officials
- Contact your representatives (City council, state legislators, members of congress, etc). Calls and in-person meetings are very important to have with themif you can. You can also email/write them letters!
- Keep your letters/emails/talks with them clear. Talk about repeal, amendment, or introducing new legislation to combat these laws.
- Track who supports or opposes your position and apply pressure accordingly!
Using the legal system to fight against these laws
- Laws can be challenged in court if they violate constitutional rights. This often involves working with attorneys/other organizations like the ACLU. (Again do your research on the organizations you want to support/partner with on these issues.)
- Supporting or joining lawsuits can be one of the most direct ways to overturn a law. (Since these laws may violate others laws or your personal rights some people take this route!)
Ballot measures/referendums
- Depending on your state, citizens can propose repeals or changes through petitions that put measures on the ballot. (This requires gathering signatures and running a campaign, but it can directly overturn laws. That is also why I spread petitions around. It is very important you do this!)
- Write op-eds if possible, use social media to spread the news/write about it there, and engage local media. (Many people are doing this including me! Helping raise awareness is incredibly important for these issues!)
- Educating others and shifting public opinion is often what ultimately pushes lawmakers to act!
- Support candidates who align with your position, or run for office yourself. (That means voting when you are of age or supporting them in other ways! I just voted these type of people out in my local election a few weeks ago!)
(Thank you @littlechaoscryptid for asking :) ❤️👍! I hope these can help you and others to fight these online safety laws. Remember do not panic! We NEED to come together to support and encourage one another to fight against these laws 🌐✊️⚔️!)
