Music...
There was music wisping up from the edge of the base; haunting, wistful music and the most beautiful singing voice Rey had ever heard. It drew her in, sent her past the latest band of pilgrims arrived to join the Resistanceâs cause, past a returning scout or six, past an incoming supply train and then-
Then she saw her; the singer, the artisan, just as beautifully bedecked and presented as her voice implied she would be. She fairly shimmered in the dim light, all blues and golds as she plucked at her instrument and sang like she was the only person in the galaxy. Rey couldnât imagine having such a craft herself, or having the confidence this woman had to share it so openly.Â
So as not to disturb her, the young not-Jedi knelt down nearby to listen, swaying gently and with closed eyes as the story the song wove engulfed her; made her imagination run wild. She didnât feel at all the other womanâs eyes on her; didnât notice that she was being watched until the song eased to a close and she blinked herself out of what had almost become a bit of a meditative state for her. Reyâs cheeks flamed under the visitorâs keen, inquisitive gaze.
âI...Iâm sorry if I disturbed you somehowâ she managed, half way to her feet already. â...Iâve never known a skill like yours before.â

Very few people saw the Knights of Ren without their masks. Even fewer would know them in any way outside of their work. Mayako was a rare exception. She was an excellent entertainer, and he couldnât help but be reminded of Areun, the love heâd lost so long ago.
âWhy do you spend your time with old men like me when you could be performing for kings?â
It was a cool February day that found Ron and his delicate friend walking around the main lake in Hyde Park, central London. Gladly enough there were few people in this area of the park, so they could have wisp of privacy away from the gawping public and the crackle of paparazzi cameras that seemed to dog the womanâs footsteps even more than they could do Ronâs. They were each famous in their own right, in a sense; he for the work he and his brother did on the club scene and the revitalisation of the East End. Her, for her very being; her grace and skill; her talents.
The reprieve was bliss to them both.Â
âGot a question fâyahâ Ron offered after a few minutes of quiet strolling. Constant conversation suited neither of them all of the time. Gentle, comfortable lulls came and went without issue. âYâobviously dedicated tâth life yâlead. I commend that in yah. Really do. Ainât ofâen people are so set on their profession that they put their whole life inta itâs expression.. .. ..Did yah choose it? Tâbe a geisha? Donât know âow it works, ân donât mean offence in askinâ..Only wonder if yâpicked it.. ..or it picked you.â
â we will be who we are. â

Such a philosophical offering, and one that slipped right between her ribs too, wasnât quite what Rey had expected when sheâd brought the visiting artisan some refreshments as the campâs temperatures rose. Theirs was a jungle world - crest and troughs of heat were inevitable - but that didnât mean sheâd leave the woman in all her silks and finery to suffer. It was crushed ice and juice and philosophy for them both. And then those words had landed andâŚthey turned Rey silent and introspective for a good half-minute.
ââŚCan who we think we are, and who we really are, be different?â she brooked curiously, deference to this worldly womanâs ideas in how she held herself; in the low set of her shoulders and how she dipped her chin. âDoes one shape the other, do you think?â

FN-2437 lifted when another person approached his quarantine. How long had he been in here? He wasnât sure but the trooper wasnât marking the days either. He never had a reason to mark the days. Time was a concept he was struggling with more or less since everything started happening. Sometimes it was difficult just to stay grounded in the present reality.
He looked the other over and turned to face them. Someone he didnât know asking him what his fears were. He stared down for a long moment and tried to decide what was another fear. He knew one that gripped at his heart and threatened his chest. It was the whispers that kept him up at night. The voice that told him what he could do, what he should do.
âIâm frightened...â He paused and thought about how it might actually sound out loud. Despite what it would or wouldnât give away about his situation, it didnât change where he was int he present moment. It also didnât lessen or increase his chance of being let out one moment before he was meant to be. âOf what Iâm capable of doing.â He confessed not as a posture of power but of fear that he could run.
A well thought out plan and he could have fled and thatâs what scared him the most. It frightened him that whatever was happening to him was going to drive him to flee. It wasnât what he wanted, it was never something that he wanted. The empire was his home and it always would be.
There was no other place, no other sense of belonging.
He was born into the First Order. He was raised in the First Order and he would die for the First Order.

Rey looked around surreptitiously, then edged a little closer to the curious artisan. âYou mustnât tell a soulâ she confided quietly. âBut I have tripped up a certain difficult man of my immediate acquaintance more than once.âÂ
It was Dameron she was speaking of; he of endless rebukes; endless questioning of her being bound up in what he derisively called Force Stuff instead of being on the battle field.Â
âHe can be like a Rancor to a fresh kill at timesâ she went on. âA little lost balanceâŚâ Her head wobbled from side to side a moment, as if she was weighing up options. âIt refocuses his mindâ
