Yeah, when I was looking at phones one of the top considerations for me was camera quality, since Iāve seen some less than stellar cameras on Android phones. But the Pixel 3ā²s camera got pretty high marks and so far itās doing great!Ā

for the trope mash up #6 bookshop au and #52 marriage of convenience Jake/Cougar
The Losers fandom really likes bookshop AUs. Whatās with that? I mean, Iām not complaining, but what are the odds of getting three of them?Ā
AH WELL. I admit that I had a hard time deciding what time period to put this in and I ended up choosing one I hadnāt done before (and one I happen to be very much intrigued by right now). So, below the cut you will find my ideas for a story with these two tropes in it ā a Fantasy AU, to be more precise ;)
Working in a bookshop is, in fact, a dream come true for Jake. He grew up poor in the huge, bustling capital and never really saw much aside from the nearby houses and his fatherās smithy. There was this kind lady a couple of houses down that taught him how to read, though, and Jake loved it from the very start. So, as he grew older, he read whatever he could get his hands on which, admittedly, wasnāt much. Still, for a couple of hours he was able to dream of faraway lands and kings and queens and valiant adventures, and books becameĀ a bit of a refuge for him.
So, at the age of fifteen, when he is offered a job at a bookstore instead of his fatherās smithy, he takes it. And he LOVES IT. Maybe he reads more than he should, but some days are slow and the owner is okay with it. The fact that the bookshop is in a nicer part of town also means that Jake earns quite a lot of money and even if he gives most of it to his mom and sister, at least he feels like heās moved up in the world.
It is in the bookshop that he reads his first spellbook. And, sure, heās probably not supposed to try them out because only mages are allowed to, but whoās to know? Some of the spells are absolutely wicked and Jake just gets bored easily. No harm done, right?
Jake is twenty-four and comfortably content with his life when a new customer steps inside the shop. Jake has never seen him before but the man is, without a doubt, the prettiest Jake has ever seen and his clothes are far too nice to belong to a commoner. So the guy is undoubtedly a noble of some kind and Jake makes sure to be extra polite when the man asks for help to buy a book for his sister. Jake gives some tips and somewhere along the way lose track of time entirely, giving the stranger a lengthy review of several of Jakeās favourite books before he even realises what heās doing. The stranger doesnāt seem to mind, however, and Jake might blush a bit when the man smiles at him. His name is Carlos, Jake learns, and he might be a little bit smitten.
Eventually, they find a book for Carlosās sister and Jake is disappointed to see him go. But, hopefully, Carlos might come back some other time.
And, of course, he does. Several times.
The first couple he really does have books to buy, but, after a while, he seems to show up just to talk to Jake. Or, well, listens to Jake, because Carlos doesnāt talk much, but thatās fine ā Jake talks for the both of them. Jake can tell that Carlos is pretty damn rich, even if he clearly tries to hide it, and therefore never lets himself believe this is anything but a casual acquaintance, but a part of him wishes it was more. It doesnāt take long at all before the mere sight of Carlos makes Jakeās heart race, and every time Carlos does say something, Jake has to hold back a delighted shiver. Besides, Carlos is so damned pretty with his dark, warm eyes, long, soft hair, and that subtle confidence that makes Jakeās knees a little weak. He can tell that theyāre very different ā not just their personalities but class and such as well ā and he knows it would never work, but he can dream, right?
Jake is surprised the day he realises that theyāve known each other for over five months. It feels both longer and shorter, somehow, and heās so helplessly in love he doesnāt know what to do with himself half of the times. So he talks instead, about himself and his dreams and things heās read about. The one thing they rarely talk about is Carlos and whoever he might be, but thatās fine because Jake doesnāt need to know. Heās curious, sure, but wouldnāt dream of asking.
After the six-month mark rolls around, Jake realises that maybe he should have. Thatās when the betrothal between the prince ā not the heir to the throne but an important part of the royal family nonetheless, Jake is told ā and a neighbouring landās princess is announced. The entire city is celebrating and Jake is happy,Ā too, until he happens to see the announcement posters and thatās Carlos ā Jake would recognise that face anywhere. Carlos is the prince.
Jake isnāt surprised that he didnāt know ā heās way, way below the nobility and he has no idea what they look like ā but he realises just how stupid heās been. And how insulting. He could probably be thrown in jail for some of the things heās said to the fucking prince, and knows he has to do better.
So next time Carlos comes around, Jake congratulates him on his engagement and makes sure to use the proper titles and as good manners as he can manage. Carlos, surprisingly, looks like his heart just shattered into pieces. That doesnāt help Jake at all because heās still trying to swallow the fact that the man heās in love with is getting married and heās the fucking prince so Jake should cut his losses and move on. But he doesnāt want to, especially not when Carlos swallows and tells him itās just politics. A marriage of convenience and alliances. He doesnāt actually want to marry, but doesnāt really have much of a say on the matter.
And thatās when Jake realises that his story wonāt end as happily as his books do. Neither of them is getting a happily ever after.
When Carlosās leaves that time, Jake is pretty sure he wonāt be coming back. That would just be rubbing salt in the wounds.
Jake is absolutely correct.
He doesnāt see Carlos for over two months and tries very hard not to let the heartbreak show, but heās pretty sure Jess can tell. She kind enough not to ask, though, which is a small blessing.
But first she asks him if he loves Carlos back and, without really meaning to, Jake stutters out a yes. If heās going to die, he at least wants to have that said out loud.
She explains that neither of them wants to marry but sheās the heir so she canāt exactly run off, not to mention that sheās actually quite keen to rule her homeland. Carlos, on the other hand, is only second in line with younger siblings to take over, should something happen to his older sister. So, the princess argues, Carlos could totally break the engagement and run off into the sunset with Jake. It would be a scandal, for sure, but the princess is certain their countries will manage an alliance even without a marriage, if nothing else when she takes the throne.
Jake stands dumbfounded but, when pressed, nods.
He would very much like to be together with Carlos, even if it means running away for a little while. The princess assures him of that too ā Carlosās parents are much too kind of exile them for eloping, but they might want to stay away until the worst of the scandal has died down, at the very least. Meaning that Jake doesnāt have to leave his sister and young niece permanently. For a little while, sure, but theyāll be back.
Once satisfied with his answer, the princess leaves, giving Jake ample time to freak out about the whole thing. He even starts having regrets, wondering if itās a trap somehow, up until the point where thereās a knock on his door the following night and finds Carlos and the princess standing outside. Jake, again, is a little too stunned to react, especially when he sees the simple travelling clothes Carlos is wearing.
But the princess explains that the sooner they leave, the better. The planning for the wedding has already started and it will be less of a waste if they go now. Not to mention that someone might figure out theyāre eloping and try to stop them. Jake stops only long enough to ask Carlos if heās aware of what heās doing. Heās no doubt going to be the one whoās hit with more consequences, but Carlos just looks at Jake, his gaze serious and so full of hope and determination that Jake canāt breathe. Then says:
āItās worth it.ā
And that settles it for Jake.
Their departure ends up being on pretty short notice and Jess isnāt happy at all, except she really is because she wants whatās best for her brother and heās been so miserable this past couple of weeks. She takes the time to give Carlos a quick shovel talk, thank the princess for her solution to the problem, and then proceeds to pack Jake and Carlos some food for their journey.
And, just like that, Jake finds himself sneaking out of the capital with a wayward prince and, as he laces his fingers together with Carlosās and gives him a shy but happy smile, he knows this is just the beginning of their adventures together.
THE END.
Aaaaand yeah. How about that? I could easily go on about their adventures (which would involve the magic I only managed to throw in as a small footnote here) and dragons and whatnot. But youāll have to settle for this ;)
And yes, I know that the marriage of convenience wasnāt between Jake and Cougar but no one said it had to be! This worked better with my idea xD

archwrites replied to your photo āNINE POUNDS OF ADORABLEā
When you named them, did you already know that Dearborn was more of a dear than Polk (no insult to Polk intended!)?
I tossed around a bunch of names as ideas, but Dearborn and Polk were my favorite pair of names. Deebs did LOOK like a Dearborn in the photo, but at that point I didnāt even know Polk existed (Polk never made it onto the adoption site before I adopted them).Ā It wasnāt until I got to meet them that it became IMMEDIATELY apparent that yes, these names would fit. So when I named her I knew that she was a dear, and I knew that Polk was the kind of cat toĀ āpokeā into everything. But only because they had such wonderfully evident personalities even so young. Itās really how I knew they were the ones for me, that they suited the names I had for them so well.Ā
lightwit replied to your post āSo what music do you like to listen to if you don't like most music?ā
Do your parents/family listen to music? I'm asking because my music taste is similar to yours and I come from a family where no one really listens to music (from grandparents down to cousins). So I always thought it's an inherited thing (either through genes or by exposure) that I don't listen to music much. Just interested to know if it's similar for you.
My father played the piano and my mother is very musical -- she plays a couple of instruments (well, not really anymore, but she knows how, is my point) and sings. They had me in music education from a very young age and I think it was probably pretty upsetting to them that I just couldnāt give two shits about any classical composer except Tchaikovsky, and him really only at first because I had a cassette tape that was the story of his life interspersed with his music and I think he had a really interesting life.Ā
I think it was probably a relief to all involved when I quit the piano. Iām actually truly surprised Mum gave me any kind of musical instrument this past Christmas, even a learner ukulele, because I remember how frustrated she was with my total disinterest in music as a child and her HORROR at my musical tastes as a teen (ran strongly to Alternative, which is like Pop Designed To Annoy Your Parents).Ā
tagathaxĀ replied to your postĀ āSo what music do you like to listen to if you don't like most music?ā
Can I ask you what you mean by that music's very mathy? I'm terrible with maths but I love music and I've always thought they're very opposite of each other. Although I remember reading somewhere that Bach's music has some math elements in it but I don't see it myself (or maybe I just don't understand it as maths).
All of music is basically counting and number values. Like, if youāve ever listened to someone try to explain musical theory itās literally allĀ āmusic is twelve notes in seven tones in eight octaves and everythingās a ratioā.Ā
I canāt actually explain this to you because I donāt understand math or musical theory, but yeah, music and math are heavily interrelated. (I googled quickly and there appears to be a great overview from the American Mathematical Society here.)
What this means is not that if you donāt understand math you canāt enjoy music. What it means is that people who make and teach music are predominantly extremely comfortable with mathematical theory and tend to apply it in their work -- and something that is mathematically beautiful is not always audibly so to someone who doesnāt understand the underlying theory.
I believe there are also studies that link the musical and mathematical centers in the brain but Iām not interested enough in this topic to google. :DĀ
hystericblue replied to your post āSo what music do you like to listen to if you don't like most music?ā
"music's very mathy" ??? *all the question marks* so what I'm getting is, you like musicals and probably early Disney stuff where they sang parts of the story.
Not really. Early musicals in particular were zero about using the music to tell a story and 100% about showing off the vocal ability of the performers. This also influenced early film, including animated but also live-action musicals. Look at any given musical made before about 1970 and youāll see that most of the songs arenāt about forwarding the action but are about either describing a situation or expressing a feeling. Most songs in a musical donāt tell a story so much as set a scene. Andrew Lloyd Weber, you donāt have to like him, but he changed the way stage musicals exist -- he brought the pop sensibility into the musical theatre world and made the narrative the focus. Which on the one hand is why you get ALW movies where the leads arenāt operatic diva quality, but I canāt emphasize this enough, I donāt give a fuck and canāt tell anyway.Ā
I love Les Mis (not an ALW joint, I know, but a part of the pop-musical movement) and I love the narrative quality of its music and I went to see the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it and couldnāt tell for a second who could and couldnāt sing. I listen to people say the singing ruined it for them and like...I didnāt notice. And itās okay that people did, and I understand how that might have been an issue for them. But what Iām saying is that vocal quality, beyond a basic competence, is a non-factor for me, and itās not the biggest factor in pop-musical tradition. The story rules. Hence not caring much for early musicals. (There are some old showtune songs I like. Summertime, Blow Gabriel Blow, a few others, but those are songs plucked from musicals where I may not enjoy any other song in the show.) Ā
There are a couple of Disney films whose music I really enjoy, but they tend to be later, from my childhood, which has a nostalgia element -- but also my childhood was a really great time for Disney movies, and a lot of the songs were written by pop stars. And pop stars DO know how to tell a story in a song and are aware that most people listening give zero shits about the vocal quality of the performer beyondĀ ācan they hit the right note at the right spotā. Elton John is a great vocalist, but heās also aware his voice is not why people love his music.Ā
Uh, that got long, sorry. But yeah, I often have to defend my near-total disinterest in musicals, as a former theatre kid, because I have no ear for good singing and thus donāt care about vocalists.Ā
