So, on the one hand, people forced to return to work are being told to not to take public transport where possible. I think Grant Schapps even went as far as to say this was your “civic duty” or something.
Meanwhile, the congestion charge has been reinstated, and not only that- it will rise to £15 on 22 June.
As well as this, most types of cars need to pay the ULEZ fee of £12.50. So at the moment, you are paying £24, just to drive into central (along with obviously petrol, parking and other car related costs). Realistically, most people who work in the congestion charge area can’t walk or cycle to work. Lots of people who live further out do own cars and were maybe thinking of driving to work when they don’t usually as it’s safer, but £24 is surely going to put most of them off, even if they could theoretically “afford” it.
Obviously, for the very rich, this is pocket change, so it won’t affect the Tories and their banker mates, but if you are on a middle or low income (like most of the people going back to work), £24 is a lot of money!
So, this will push more people onto already crowded public transport. Do the Tories actually want a second peak- like what is the thinking here?
And yeah, as someone who would probably self identify as an environmentalist, arguing against the congestion charge is pretty weird to me- yet another sign how crazy 2020 has been!
Just bear this in mind when people are talking about reopening stuff.
