I often run into bad Shakespeare opinions, but very rarely do I come across bad Chekhov opinions. While there is a lot of humor in Chekhov basically I think it’s a slight disservice to do them all as straight comedies
#chekhov#personal#yeeeeeeeet#and NO not all the characters are rich for pete's sake#did you not read three sisters#irina's whole story is I gotta marry the rich guy to save my house even though I don't love him#UGHGHG#uh yes im a chekhov stan#second favorite playwright#also#it reallly depends on translation#ive read some goofy translations that can be jarring#not that comedy isn't inferior#i dont think it is#but chekhov writes about the plight of NORMAL PEOPLE#that's why it was revolutionary at the time#theatre people weren't doing that
