Jürgen was still a child in his mind. Even in the body of a fourteen-year-old, he was the same doe-eyed toddler that liked holding on to Sebastian’s thumbs and following him wherever he went in the house, regardless of whether or not Jürgen could walk at the time. People like that did not survive in the world Sebastian lived in. The soft and wide-eyed boys died hard and violent deaths. It was a fact of the life Sebastian had grown up living. He’d never accounted for the fact that those same boys could survive — that Jürgen could triumph where Sebastian had failed by refusing capture and jumping into the Rhine. It took far more courage to defy than it did to surrender. Jürgen was indisputably brave.
