Hans Paule Colour Woodcut ‘Cariatide’ ~ Capri 1944.
Titled in pencil above the image in the margin, "Cariatide" which is Italian for Caryatid, a type of Greek classical sculpture of a female figure serving as an architectural support. The women of Capri, where Hans Paule worked and spent much of his life reminded him of the Greek figures.
Hans Paule is known for his rare abstracted Secessionist - Art Deco style woodcut prints of Italian life and this piece is a fine and large example of his work as a printmaker.
