Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds (slight spoilers)

Blurb: fifteen-year-old Will just saw his older brother shot and killed. But he already knows what to do next. The Rules are 1. no crying, 2. no snitching, and 3. revenge. We follow Will through the aftermath of this event in a single elevator ride, battling through his options not only in his head but with the patrons that step into the elevator at each floor.

Subjective: glued to my seat. May or may not have continuously read this at all the red lights on my way to dinner. Lyricism that flows like the conversations in Shakespeare plays. Imagery that paints different art styles in each section for each new person we meet. Never felt like I was being spoon-fed information. The ending was clear yet impactful; the only question left was the one Will had to answer. Good call backs to previous parts and information that tied more of the story together.

The commentary on rampant gun violence was presented in a way that young adult and beyond readers can understand. Fleshed out relationship dynamics between Will and those who stepped into the elevator. And the call to action for Will was blunt enough that it felt as though it could speak to anyone reading who's been in similar situations. Overall, fantastic writing and flow.

Objective: twelve awards for this book including being a Newberry Honor book.
