For the hard-core math fans among you, hold onto your hats - Sean Carroll has just made his Core Theory T-shirt available to anyone and everyone.
Our everyday world is well-described by an effective field theory...The fact that gravity is readily included in the EFT of everyday life has long been emphasized by Frank Wilczek. As discussed in his latest book, A Beautiful Question, he therefore advocates lumping GR together with the Standard Model and calling it The Core Theory....I couldn’t agree more, so I adopted by same nomenclature for my own upcoming book, The Big Picture. There’s a whole chapter (more, really) in there about the Core Theory. After finishing those chapters, I rewarded myself by doing something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time — put the equation on a T-shirt, which you see above.
I confess that makes my head hurt a bit, but I’m a fan of anything that promotes how amazing math is at describing the world (and universe) around us.
Note: we’ve featured Sean and his stellar taste in t-shirts before.

We’re collaborating with science communication researcher Dr. Paige Brown Jarreau for a survey of startorialist readers. Your participation will help us improve STARtorialist, contribute to publishable research on the readers of science blogs, and enter you to win one of three STARtorialist prize packs (like we gave away earlier this year). The survey should only take you 10-15 minutes to complete. Take the survey here!
