Today, the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational officially kicked off the 2016/17 holding period with a culturally rich ceremony to honor Hawaiian waterman, Waimea Bay lifeguard and Big Wave pioneer Eddie Aikau.

The Aikau family and a significant number of the world's greatest big wave surfers gathered to show their respect for Eddie in the event’s 32nd anniversary.

The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is the original one-day, Big Wave surfing event, started in memory of Hawaiian waterman, Waimea Bay lifeguard and Big Wave pioneer Eddie Aikau.

What started 31 years ago to pay tribute to Aikau, has grown to become an almost mythic event whose elusiveness has only fueled its global appeal.

The Eddie only runs when wave face heights reach a minimum of 40 feet at Waimea Bay… a day so rare it has only happened nine times in 31 years.

Next time you paddle out, remember Eddie’s connection to the ocean. The ocean was a spiritual place for Eddie. It’s where he went to find peace in life and where he found peace in passing. The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau will always remain a symbol of the Hawaiian waterman – Eddie’s spirit and legend lives on today.

We are absolutely frothing over this recipe for Coconut Matcha Chia Pudding that we found on Pastry Affair. We tried this at home, and not only is it delicious, it is so simple! Ingredients and directions below. Happy mixing! Yewww!

Ingredients (Yields four 1/2-cup servings)   14.5 ounces (1 can or 428 mL) canned coconut milk 1 1/2 teaspoons matcha powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup (to taste) 1/4 cup (50 grams) chia seeds 1 recipe Coconut Whipped Cream 1/3 cup (30 grams) shredded coconut

Directions

In a food processor or blender, blend together the canned coconut milk, matcha powder, vanilla, and maple syrup. Transfer to a medium bowl and whisk in chia seeds. Cover and refrigerate for one hour. Then whisk the pudding once and return it to the refrigerator to set overnight.

Before serving, stir shredded coconut into coconut whipped cream. Set aside.

Divide pudding evenly between serving containers. Top with a generous amount of whipped cream and serve. 

Too easy!

1. Dial-in your local spot

Now that you have gotten down the basics, start to dial-in your local breaks. Take note of key pieces of information, such as what tides and swell directions work best at your beach. There are many online tools you can use (Surfline, SwellMagnet, MagicSeaweed, etc), but also know that the most critical information comes from experience at that break. When you are sitting in the lineup, notice where surfers are taking off to get the best lines. Basic observation can go a long way in learning the ideal places to be to catch the best waves. 

2. Think about the little things

This one may sound vague, but it pays to be conscientious of small habits you create each session. For example, a lot of beginners do not realize how important it is to keep their feet together when paddling. Not only does this help not look like a kook, but it is critical to balance and core strength. 

3. Try different boards

Once you are comfortable and confident with your surfing, try as many boards as possible to find what volume works for you. Perhaps you enjoy the looseness of a single fin or the quick turns of a thruster. There is a big difference between buying different boards and trying different boards, so do not make the mistake of stocking your quiver with boards that do not suit your body dimensions and/or skill level.  

4. Master your duck dive

You probably already have this down, but there is always room for improvement! In order to catch the waves of your dreams, you have to be able to get to them! Try to push yourself a little deeper with each dive and in no time you will be ready for whatever massive wall of water comes your way.

5. Keep a surf journal

Having a surf journal can be rewarding for multiple reasons. A journal helps you track your progress and taps into your stoke levels of each session. It is also fun to have a log of all your adventures. Nothing is better than looking back to a dream session you had and reliving stoke that you recorded. A surf journal can also help you keep track of the best tides, swell directions, conditions, etc. when that dream session happened so when the same conditions recur, you can be ready to go. Your journal is an expression of yourself. It can be written on paper or it can be captured with photos and videos. Find what works best for you and go from there!

...But of course, the best way to improve your surfing is to SURF. So get out there and have fun! See you in the lineup!

Australian Tyler Wright, 22, has claimed the 2016 World Surf League (WSL) Women’s Title today, besting remaining challenger Californian Courtney Conlogue, 24, at the Roxy Pro France.

An elite tour competitor since 2011, Wright’s clinching of her maiden world surfing crown today comes after an emotional year with her family.

“A lot has gone into this, a lot of hours and a lot of moments,” said Wright. “There are a lot of reasons why I set out the win this World Title this year and a lot of reasons that I did not mention to the public. Last year was such a hectic year and even this year. I lost an uncle and this was the last event that he ever saw me compete in. A lot of emotional moments, but pretty much from that moment I promised him that I would win a World Title and I did. So many things happened this year. Owen and my family and my mom, and I just love them so much!”

Meet Nick Green, the extraordinary photographer behind stunning images from around the world. At only 20 years of age, Nick has been to places most people only ever dream of. Thankfully for us, Nick beautifully captures moments from his remarkable travels and shares them with the world. Read more about Nick's photography and adventures below.

Tell us a little about yourself. What does a day in your shoes look like?

It really depends on what is happening at the time. Routine isn’t my best friend (laughs)! If the winds offshore, I’ll check the waves, which hopefully leads to having a surf, then normally I’ll try and get some emails done and try to plan future trips or any projects I’m working on. Ive been super into skating at the moment, everyday Tuesday night a bunch of us spend the night at the bowl having beers and pushing each other, it’s good fun. I also really enjoy Tasmania’s nature, so i try to get out amongst it as much as i can, whether it be camping somewhere remote or just driving my van to a waterfall or mountain range.

When did you start taking photographs?

I think it was around 2010 when i first started to take photos on a semi-regular basis.

Was there a pivotal photograph you took where you knew that you wanted to pursue photography as a career?

Nah i can’t say there was, perhaps more an experience where i thought; ‘hey, the reason I’m experiencing this right now is because I take photos. It’s been platform to so many amazing things in my life.

Tell us a little more about your travels. Do you have a favorite place you have been?

Tasmania is, and always will be, my favourite place in the world..Sure, I’m keen to travel the world and see it all, but Tassie will always be home. I recently did a month long trip through The Kimberly in Western Australia, it was a completely different trip to any I’ve been on before, not seeing the ocean once the entire time...but i loved it! That place was nuts.

What equipment do you work with?

I shoot with a Canon 5dMarkiii, 50mm 1.4mm, 24-104mm, 8-15mm, 100-400mm and use Aquatech Waterhousings

What inspires you?

I think the desire to live a happy and adventurous life is a big inspiration to me. It seems that whenever I’m taking photos it means I’m doing something i love, which is nice.

Advice for aspiring photographers?

Less is more... Find your own style.. Don’t forget to enjoy the moment before trying to capture it..

What is next for Nick Green?

Travel wise, I’m off to Noosa for 10 days in November, followed by Vanuatu and then hopefully California or Mexico early next year. Besides that, I’m looking forward to spending the summer living in my van and enjoying my time in the best place in the world with all the legends that live down here.

Steph Gilmore, Inside The Tempest. It’s hard to go past Indonesia for a strike mission in the middle of the liturgical year. We scoured the archipelago from the comfort of our office chairs in search of a wave that compliments Steph’s particular set of skills. Steph was after “cute slabs” – the definition of which you’ll discover in due course—and while we weren’t blessed with days of waves, the one day of money was well worth the wait, and near-death experience of the boat ride back to base. Here’s two days on a leaky boat through the rose-tinted specs of the eternally peppy, Miss Stephanie Gilmore. "Stephanie is an original badass. She surfs like people should surf and plays music from her soul. She's interested in a variety of topics outside of riding waves. She's got an eclectic and diverse group of friends and followers all around the world. She'd be just as comfortable in her skin if nobody knew who she was. My mom wrote me yesterday and said she is a Stephanie groupie and she just loves her whole deal. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has anything but praise for her. She's not complicated like most women seem to be and knows how she wants to live and what she wants. What else can I say?" Kelly Slater.
