I have nothing but pride for @dog_s_are_the_best for working towards his eighth grade capstone project goal of hand making a dozen baseball bats for youth athletes in Cienfuegos, Cuba! The first 3 will be going this week with students from Tacoma's School of the Arts and Science and Math Institute! #seaburyschool #seaburymiddleschool #capstone #handmade #baseball #baseballbat #sistercity #cienfuegos #cuba #tacoma_wa #madeintacoma (at Madera Fine Decorative Furnishings)
I had a great time at #seaburyschool 's first #makersfaire today. The kids (and a few big kids too!) had fun making curly ribbons with some various planes and spoke shaves. #woodworking #madeintacoma #makersgottamake #handtools #tacomawa (at Seabury School)

This year my son's middle school class has been studying earthquakes and plate tectonics for science. Next, each kid gets to build a structure to test its resilience to a simulated earthquake. When asked by his teacher, I jumped at the chance to build a #shaketable simply because I love these sorts of projects. My original design incorporated an electric drill motor and a spinning offset disc. But along the way I remembered that I had this old car buffer and my life was made much simpler. I first laminated the pegboard and a piece of 1/4" plywood with a core of 1 1/2" rigid insulation foam. I wanted the top stiff but light weight. Getting the springs bolted top and bottom was tricky and accomplished with fender washers and a grinder. I cut an 8" disc of 1/4" plywood and mounted it to the plate on the buffer. In a 1/2" piece of plywood I cut a circular hole just slightly bigger that the 1/4" disc. I attached the 1/2" to the bottom of the table top, made a box to support the modified buffer and positioned it below with steel angles. Since the buffer is not variable speed I bought a tabletop lamp dimmer which works fabulous and allows the operator to stand back when switching it on. #forthechildren #seaburyschool #seaburymiddleschool #scienceproject #madeintacoma
