“you want me to help you find who you are?”

the tone of your voice had been a bit more harsher than you intended, realizing your mistake you put in a slight panic,

“no, it’s not that i don’t want to! i’m--i’m flattered, but,” you avoided the other’s gaze, scratching the back of your neck nervously, “i’m not sure if i’ll be of much help-- and frankly, i don’t know where to start.. but, i’ll... i’ll try my best!”

they smiled, genuine gratefulness in their eyes as they thanked you with a handshake, their touch soft and comforting. it made you giddy as he caressed your hand with a grin,

“thank you, [Y/n]. it means a lot to me.”

as you both sat in the empty classroom, the sunset dimly lighting the room, you though to yourself.

where would you start? how did one find their identity in the first place? would you start with sexuality? preferences? gender? hobbies? opinions? whether they’re a busybody or a casual working person?

you let out a playful sigh, staring at the Ultimate Imposter with an empathetic smile and furrowed brows.

“i apologize if this is bothering you,” their voice had startled you from your in-thought thinking, “you really don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, it is one of my troubles, so-”

“no!” you protested, a little nervous after hearing them feel so bad about this, “seriously, it’s fine! i want to help out, so obviously i’m going to help out. i’m just... thinking of where to start, is all.”

they hummed, nodding, “yes, that is a problem.. i’m not sure where to start, either.” they gave you a smile, bashful, “again, i apologize for dragging you into this. if you ever want out, let me know.”

you blinked, a smile forming on your face as you let out a small sound of excitement, “i know! we’ll start with things you’d like to do,” you looked towards them, right ankle lifting to rest on the other knee, “so, what would you like to do?”

“hone my skills as the Ultimate Imposter, of course.”

your smile dimmed a little, “no-no, we’re not including your Ultimate in this-” you tapped your finger on the risen ankle on your left knee, humming, “if you weren’t the Ultimate Imposter, and had no Ultimate talent, what would you like to do?”

they thought for a while, and you couldn’t help but smile at the improvement. they were thinking of what they liked and that was a big step for them, it made you giddy. you were proud of them.

“i’m...not sure,” they fidgeted with their fingers, brows furrowing in a certain nervousness, “i’ve never thought about it before.”

“well, for example, what are..” you trailed off, trying to find the right words, “what are the things you enjoy while impersonating someone?”

they gave a small huff, “you don’t understand, [Y/n]. i’ve never been anyone my whole life. i’ve never told myself anything like ‘i enjoy this’ or ‘i dislike this’. i was just someone until i wasn’t, and that’s all it ever was.”

they’re tone of speaking was almost like they were talking down on you, as if they were speaking a mater of factly. it earned them a stern look from you, and a deep frown.

“that’s why i’m helping you,” you responded, “i’m-- i’m not good a this kind of stuff, i know. but an identity is something you find with time! you...shouldn’t rush it, yunno?”

they gave you a bitter smile, although their heart would not stay still.

“thank you.”
