peter’s been in love with music since before he was born. he doesn’t remember it, obviously, but when his mother was pregnant with him, she’d put her headphones around her pregnant belly and have her unborn baby listen to her favourite song at the moment while she danced around the living room or kitchen. it didn’t stop when he was born, and when he was a baby, his fitful tantrums were soothed by the popular songs of the 70′s. his mother gave him her walkman on his first day of kindergarten. he was having separation anxiety and she pressed it into his small hands and told him so long as he listened to those tapes and had that walkman with him, she would always be with him ( which is why it hurt so much when ego smashed it but hahaha that pain is for another meta ). after that, you couldn’t separate peter from that walkman even if you tried. there were several times when it required repairs because even though he was very careful with it, bullies at school were mean )))): he wouldn’t let his mom buy him a new one though; it had to be the same walkman and so she would always scrape up the funds to get it repaired. it what (somewhat) helped him through the few months of his mother’s illness, and he clung to it as a lifeline when yondu took him. I do not think he would have survived the terror and such of yondu and his men had he not had his walkman with him, remembering his mother’s words.
as long as you got your walkman and you listen to these tapes, I’ll always be with you.
anyway he will never really admit to it, but music is very near and dear to his heart. he is listening to it constantly, and when he’s not? well, he’s humming it, and tapping his foot as he listens to whatever is stuck in his head. he fights his battles to it, makes love to it, grieves to it. he quite literally has a soundtrack to his life, and the easiest and fastest way to connect with him is through music. I headcanon that if he actually sat down and took the time, he’d have a VERY easy time picking up learning instruments ( in my modern verses / earth verses, he actually DOES play the guitar ). he also loooooves learning about the different types of music on all the different planets, and while his go to is ALWAYS his mother’s mix tapes ( and I guess the zune post gotg 2 ) but he’s got a massive appreciation for anything musical on whatever planet he’s on. dance / music festivals draw him in like a moth to a flame, and he would quite literally go insane without music now. it’s such a big part of who he is.
