Sound Souvenir: ZELENI VENAC/ PIJACA (Green Wreath market), Belgrade.
Short recording of the market during the afternoon, before it closes.
Sound Souvenir: ZELENI VENAC/ PIJACA (Green Wreath market), Belgrade.
A confusing conversation -between a Serbian seller, an Arab costumer and me- took place while in the market, as I was looking for someone who spoke in English.
Sound souvenir: KNEZ MIHAILOVA PEDESTRIAN STREET, Belgrade.
It may sound quite quietly... So, listen carefully to this pedestrian street from Ivana’s room. She has double windows.

smellSCAPES performance
Initially I went to the SDC expedition thinking on designing a visual map that would illustrate the smellSCAPES from Belgrade and Athens. But the days started to pass and I started to have a big amount of recollected objects and samples and the most important, quite intense feeling of the whole trip: scents, new cities, amazing artists, cool crew, adventures and new experiences.
The map felt boring and somehow not fitting my new mental scheme anymore. The ideas were shifting but I wasn’t sure where I was going.
Two days before ending the trip all the ideas seemed to find their place (or a non place) and headed towards a bold experiment:
- My body.
- 12 scents from the visited cities.
- A narrative/instructions audio.
SmellSCAPES performance is an intimate trip through the urban scents of Belgrade and Athens. While sniffing the handmade produced fragrances the audience is confronted to smell directly from the performer body the experiences experimented during the travelling.
How do you feel when smelling someone consciously? What if there are 11 persons in the same room? What if I tell you, you must smell me, when and how?
Would it be easier to smell me only when you wish? Why do you suddenly feel confronted with your gaze? No one can “see” how do you smell me !
some thoughts on navigating
where to start?
with walking I suppose.
If you were expecting a map that directs you to a specific geographical location then I am sorry to say that you have picked up the wrong piece of paper.
you can follow it in any city on any route
alone or together
Through Belgrade through Skopje through Athens through conversations with you all
it won’t help you find your way
the direct route is a construction.
don’t you think?
something to share with you:
I was walking. from one point to another. From the moment the city began to the moment is enveloped me.
And I thought...
to walk in the city is to be visible and invisible
to be in public and in private
to split ourselves
how the fuck do we deal with that?
and you?
take a traditional map , I am bad at reading them.
the part I struggle the most with is figuring out where I am.
You need to locate where you are in order to navigate yourself to where you want to go.
But sometimes you just have to keep moving until you encounter something that makes sense , that connects to the map.
But
then again
I’m interested in encountering things that don’t makes sense.
How do we locate ourselves then?
how do we navigate the mess that is the city when we start to look at ourselves in relation to everyone else that exists there.
a hotel view over a camp in transition
a sailing trip to a prison
worlds colliding
we all exist in both, but can get stuck in one or the other...
we’ve been sailing through
How did you come here?
I took the train line that was cancelled until a year ago
in crisis they made greece a island
but the boats reached the shore
and we had to all see ourselves reflected in the waters of the Mediterranean.
And then I walked, from the boundary of the ring road
but where does the city really begin?
floating through
I always give up and throw the map away
I started collecting train tickets ,
Evidence of the routes I’ve taken
paper that makes my voyage legitimate…
How did you get here?
Are you watched when you walk? Are you visible?
Do you want to be visible or invisible?
what if we all burnt our papers?
would movement cease to be illegal?
