But the idea of patreon for fan art is…totally normalised and no push back there?
Fan art kind of coasts by on good graces from rights holders as far as I can tell; I don’t know that it actually has any more legal standing than fic does. There are some brands that protect their properties a lot more tightly -- I think I’ve seen Sanrio/Hello Kitty cited as an example of this? -- and others that encourage fan art through Redbubble competitions or whatever.
I’ve never used Patreon so I don’t really know the ins and outs of how it works. I would think anyone using it as a platform to monetize fan content is playing with fire though. Beyond traditional fandom stuff like fic and art, think of those stories that go around periodically of major names like Beyonce or Taylor Swift crushing little Etsy shops etc selling “I woke up like this” mugs. I think there are a lot of people(/corporations) who are fine with looking the other way while fans do what they want... until/unless it reaches a point where that is seen as jeopardizing the brand or profiting off of it. I think it is in fandom’s best interest to stay under the radar and not be perceived as a moneymaking machine, or tolerance from rights holders could swing back around the other way fast.Â
