It destroys him.

It kills Shane, too. It's why she snaps at him to just shut up about it and do it. Because the faster they did everything else the faster they could go home.

Earth may have been shit. Shane may have had a shit childhood. But it's the only home she's had besides the Normandy. She wasn't going to abandon that. She. never. would. And being faced with direct orders along with knowing, logically, that staying would just kill everyone faster, it seems like a dilemma at the onset but it has to be done. 

And the idea that some military guy, such as James, is just supposed to be passive and accept orders without question, bothers me. That isn't a soldier. That isn't a Marine. And he would have no place on Shane's ship if that was what he was all about-- just a lapdog. She doesn't need that on her ship. She needs people who will challenge her, keep her grounded, think for themselves. 

She learned more about James in the minutes after Earth's attack than she probably did in the past six months. Because even when she yelled at him and 'offered' to let him stay on the Citadel, he chose to stay regardless. You can claim 'plot armor' but he still accepted it. He never really had to. 

Having to leave home, even if it's shit, hurts. It hurts really bad. And I'm not sure a lot of people understand it, especially if they've never had to deal with losing their home. I have. It hurts for so long. It's a constant burning. Like you did something wrong. Like you deserved it. And for a long time Shane could only blame herself for it all. If she'd been better, if people had listened, they might've been a bit more ready. An advance warning system-- better weapons-- anything.
