Snippets.
Snips and snails and sour puppy dog tails--that’s what little boys are made of.
Here are a few writing snippets pulled from my phone’s note pad, written on a whim. I figured I would share them.
This was originally planned to be a full length piece called Baby Blue. In short, Azul and Kalim are lab partners. A mistake in alchemy class ends up temporarily reverting Azul back into his child form. The rest of the piece was going to center around Kalim helping Jade and Floyd care for baby Azul. Kalim ends up learning what it is like to be in Jamil’s shoes as a caretaker, and the Leech Brothers’ relationship with Azul is explored.
Excerpt 1:
The sea was a cruel mistress—of that, Azul was certain. With each kiss, she stole away one’s breath, and with every embrace, she threatened to drag her lovers several leagues under. She could be calm and blithe one moment, then raging and vengeful the next. Learning to adapt to such fickleness had been crucial to his survival.
It was still crucial to his survival.
He was not the type to leave the future up to chance, for Lady Luck could be just as unpredictable as the sea.

Excerpt 2:
His troubles began in first period Alchemy.
The instructor: Professor Crewel. The lesson: growth potions. The problem: one Kalim Al-Asim, his lab partner for the day. As cheerful as Kalim was, it did not make up for his lack of awareness and dearth of knowledge in the laboratory.
“Kalim-san, I must advise you to be cautious with handling the ingredients for this potion,” Azul eyed his partner, whose arms were laden with all manner of herbs and bottles. “It could have disastrous consequences if prepared incorrectly.”
“No problem, no problem! I could do this with one hand tied behind my back!” Kalim chirped with a dismissive wave of the hand—almost dropping a mandrake root from his arms in the process.
“...Please refrain from doing so.” Azul bit back a sigh and relieved his partner of a jar of dried violets. They would need three spoonfuls for the potion. “And for the love of Neptune, set everything down and put on your lab safety goggles.“
“Oh, ahahahah! Thanks for reminding me, I guess I must’ve forgot!”

Excerpt 3:
Floyd dared to peek—and there, stowed away at the bottom of the pot and glaring back at him, was a familiar little octopus, his round face streaked with tears.
“D-Don’t look at me!” Azul sputtered, burying his face in his hands.
His chubby, chubby face in his chubby, chubby hands.
“Eeeeh? Azul became a little Tako-chan again?” A twisted smile blossomed on Floyd’s face. “Sooo cute~ Hey, hey, can I squeeze you, Azul? Can I?”
“I-Idiot! Of course you can’t!” Azul squeaked from inside the pot. The eel laughed, completely unperturbed.
“Now, now, Floyd,” his twin, Jade, chided. “It is rather rude of you to take joy in Azul’s plight.” Though he was telling off his brother, there was no denying the mischievous twinkle that shone in Jade’s eyes, the amused smile that played on his lips.
