I begun shipping it after I did an exchange semester in Scotland, inspired by my interactions with locals when they heard I was from Norway. A lot of people seemed to light up and go on about how much they liked Norway and how similar our countries were.
After Scotland became canon I also think their canon personalities and looks mesh really well, and regardless of if you ship ScotNor or not, no one can deny they'd be very good friends based on history alone.
Norway and Scotland definitely met for the first time during the 800s. Norway did a lot of exploring west and were the primary Scandinavian visitor in the northern parts of the British Isles. Perhaps it was the one place he'd even stay for longer periods of time besides his own land. They clased a bit in the beginning, but ultimately they were curious about each other, and a friendship gradually developed.
The friendship had its struggles when Norway suddenly couldn't travel much anymore due to being sick after the Black Plague and then being under Denmark's control for four centuries. Scotland similarly fell into a union with England and had to take a step back.
I believe they rekindled their friendship during the 1800s, when Norway gained more independence under Sweden and cruise ships started passing between the two of them. They became especially close during wwii, when Scotland hosted the Norwegian army, refugees, and regularly collaborated with Norwegians who sailed smuggler ships back and forth between Scotland and Norway.
After this, they've just fallen into an easy relationship where there's a lot of mutual respect and adoration, and bonding over shared similar experiences π They complement each other nicely and share a lot of common interests.
