***NEW BLOG POST*** - You have probably all heard of antioxidants. We are constantly being told we need to eat more fruit and veg high in them. We are told they can help prevent damage to our DNA, helping to protect us against cancer, aging, cancer… - But, are antioxidants really that good for us? - Although there is a lot of evidence based on in vitro experiments which show antopxidants can have a protective effect, there is little to show an actual affect on us- humans. - In vitro experiments, although useful in giving us a guideline for further experiments amd to give us insights into possible interactions and effects are not that relatable to our complex bodies. Additionally, in vitro experiments on anti-oxidants tend to use extreme high concentrations of a compound-way above what we could actually consume… so can we really extrapolate those data to ourselves?? - - In this blog I discuss what antioxidants are, what they are meant to do, and their roles in diet and skincare. I have also linked some really great articles from cancer research uk which go into more depth about antioxidants and vitamins-and which I highly recommend you go read. (Link to the blog post : https://scientisterica.wordpress.com/2019/06/25/antioxidants-are-they-all-they-seem/) - It’s clear that research into antioxidants has a lot of potential and is extremely interesting, however, at this stage it is all a bit unclear about their effectiveness in humans, their roles, and the dosages we need. - I am really looking forward to see where this area of research goes, and how we can take the research from lab to consumer in the future. - - #sciblog #scicomm #instascience #biology #humanhealth #science #womeninstemm #scientistsofinstagram #research #antioxidants https://www.instagram.com/p/BzIN-YEBWCX/?igshid=1kkijtz0kls1q
