The Boomerang Nebula (also called the Bow Tie Nebula) is the coldest place thus discovered in the Universe, outside of a laboratory. Its temperature is approximately 1 Kelvin, making it the only natural object known to be colder than the cosmic background radiation, which sits at 2.73 K. The nebula achieves these temperatures through extremely rapid expansion, sending its gaseous contents outward at about 500,000 kilometers per hour.
