there are many benefits to being a marine biologist, like get to meet a big ass Patrick
argentinians marine biologists are live streaming from the deep ocean the many wonders of the sea bottom
Check the live stream. There are scientists explaining what they found, which is great.
Welcome to ROV SuBastian's Dive 817! This station will be located in the north wall of the Mar Del Plata submarine canyon. We will start at 2782 m depth and move up, exploring it all the way to the top (aprox. 1700 m). We will be looking for invertebrates and fish. Specimen collection will include biological samples, water, sediments, and eDNA. Capturing high-quality images of the fauna is extremely important. The laser should remain on at all times unless directed otherwise by the lead scientist.

Transparent-faced fish drift through dusky waters. Snowlike flecks of dead plants sift down from the world above. Soft sponges peek through
Schmidt Ocean Institute is doing livestreamed ROV dives off Argentina and they are a hit locally!! It's crazy how popular they are, the Youtube stream getting 50,000 viewers on like every single dive they've done. This is wild to me- compare that with similar operations like NOAA Okeanos Explorer, which rarely tops over 500 live viewers on Youtube :( It was a big deal when Okeanos got like 5000 viewers on the shipwreck dive earlier this year. The SOI popularity is being used to push back on cuts to research science, including a proposed worker strike on August 6th! View the livestreams HERE
When we look at pictures like this, it's really hard to tell how big the animals are because the open ocean doesn't have much out there for us to compare to!
Sometimes tiny things (like anglerfish*) seem massive, & HUGE animals seem kinda normal.
The squid in this picture? Taningia danae? These bad boys can grow to 7.5 feet.
That means those big photophores are like, lime-lemon sized. HUGE.
*anglerfish are like- NOT big. Most are between golf ball and baseball sized. Some are basketball sized, but that's less common!

I'm enjoying the amazing high-quality images of these sea creatures that an expedition sighted in the underwater mountains off the coast of Chile. Over 100 suspected new species were found in February 2024.
