SCHIAPPARELLI HAUTE COUTURE S/S 2023

it was a trip inside Dante’s inferno, inspired by Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy

Daniel Roseberry explored the concept that the masterwork of the Divine Comedy is as much an allegory of doubt as it is a descent into despair and the horror of hell

As Dante descends through each layer of Hell, he realises how little he truly knows

Applied to Roseberry, this collection is a metaphor for the fear that the artists face, the torment before unveiling something shocking and brave to the world

Roseberry said that this collection is his homage to doubt, therefore he takes a step out of these house codes and foundation in surrealism in a different direction.

Experimenting with new techniques, he created lifelike faux taxidermy, sculpted completely by hand; the leopard represents Lust, the lion representing Pride, and Naomi Campbell in the Wolf coat representing avarice

Nothing in this collection is conventional, things are not as they seem. Velvet was hand-painted with colour, changing pigment to resemble the shimmer of a butterfly’s wing.

Waves of organically shaped plastrons were piled high, beautifully sculpted with real mother of pearl.. Paillettes made not of fabric, but of tin coated in leather. There were three looks for each of the 9 layers of Hell, but the overarching theme was deception.

We are forced to reconsider our preconceived notions; take a second glance, and consider that what you think you may be looking at, may not be what is truly there.

Roseberry’s last words in this collection were “When inspiration just won’t come, I remember that, no ascension to heaven is possible without a first trip to the fires”.
