Hey, it’s a music highlight! This one comes from Obitus, a role-playing game by Psygnosis. I’ve mentioned before that I wasn’t big on Obitus; its agreeable, expansive fantasy setting clashed with the impossible-to-navigate labyrinths that make up most of the game.
This piece, composed by Giulio Zicchi, captures both those sides. The main melody has an exceptionally hummable hook, and it evokes the sort of dank, slightly foreboding, expectant air that you would get at the start of an adventure into unknown territory. Once it gets far enough along, it’s reminiscent of some of the soundtrack to Jim Henson's Labyrinth – probably not a coincidence given their shared maziness and inviting-but-scary fantasy worlds.
I’ve had this stuck in my head for about two weeks now, and it won’t stop. It’s probably odd for a theme song that shoulders a game’s incongruity to be super catchy, but it’s certainly not any more confusing than the rest of Obitus.
