Among all the music for double bass from 20th century composers, Giacinto Scelsi’s compositions deserve a special mention. Not only for him being a really special character, but for his music being one of the most beautiful and deep oeuvres for the low string instrument, that is thoroughly rewarding to study, listen and play.
Scelsi’s “Mantram” was one of the first contemporary pieces that came across my way, and after years of performing it on stage I still keep discovering new aspects in its sound and form. There are inofficial, handwritten copies of the score circulating among bass players, and if you compare the available official recordings you also notice people play the piece in different keys. Mantra may be the most accessible and most popular of Scelsi’s solo pieces for bass, since it features a very songlike structure and melody and thus appears to have a more “classical” sound than the other pieces from the “Nuits” cycle.
I have written a short introductory text to “Nuits” (in German) some years ago when I started diving into it. Even though the melodic and formal structure seems simple and straightforward, the sound and character can change considerably from the choice of each player, since Selsi’s notation is very basic. There are some key features though that will shape the character of the music: the quality of vibrato, phrasing and the way of performing the accidentals and slides.
