Rev. Nathan Scarritt arrived in what is now the metropolitan Kansas City area in September 1848 to teach classes at Rev. Thomas Johnson's Shawnee Mission Indian Manual Labor School on the Kansas side and early grammar and bible studies in the young town of Westport in the Missouri territory. His family left a rich legacy including the 1906-1907 constructed Scarritt Building (and It's accompanying arcade) which once dominated the skyline along with the New York Life and New England Buildings.
