It started as little things. Needing to be called a few extra times in the morning. Missing something someone would point out. Asking someone to repeat what they just said. Most of these could be chalked up to teenage inattention, but then it started to grow more frequent.
Edie didn’t even realize she had turned her phone’s volume all the way to max when Wanda tugged one of the buds out and scolded her. The girl didn’t understand; she could hear it perfectly fine at that volume, it didn’t hurt her ears or anything. But that was when Wanda finally put the pieces together and scheduled a consultation for Edie.
The girl was mortified and ashamed, the entire way home. People her age didn’t just up and lose their hearing. That was for old people, right?
Once they were back home Edie shoved the door open and started toward her room. “Are you happy now?” she accused, not even looking back at Wanda. “Now you really can tell me I can’t go on missions or anything.”
