09/01/23 - initial ideas
Some scamping of package design I could do for the different products.
I really liked the lightbulbs and flour ideas, as when I think of lightbulbs, I think of the boring little box they come in singularly. I wanted to explore that and go to the extreme; making it more of a statement piece with multiple bulbs and a well-designed, professional exterior.
I also liked the idea of exploring with the typography of the flour types. Plain flour would have a minimalist font to show plainness, whilst self raising would be larger and more condensed, as though it was ‘raising’ itself up. Bread flour was more art deco, with the letters forming the outline of a loaf of bread to easily communicate to the consumer what type of flour it is.
Scamping: Way of Communication
When searched up the definition of scamping is, to do something in a perfunctory or inadequate way. It basically is quick sketch of what your thought process on an idea, just as quick as your mind when you’re thinking of something. Using this skill, I was able to create ideas without actually having to make the final piece which is something I truly think is useful, since I am the type of person who likes to perfect to the max. Just like how the mind works, constantly functioning I feel with scamping it’s the same process, simply sketching out several different ideas. Another benefit with scamping is the fact that you know have to be a professional artist or illustrator to create your sketch, I feel as long as you understand the idea that your drawing you have mastered the art of scamping. You don’t have to truly invest in perfecting your drawing since you’re just going to add onto your idea. In professional aspect another bonus to scamping is that you’re able to visually present your ideas without confusion, since you’re visually presenting your idea other people can see what your idea is and the direct in where it’s going, which again is very useful especially in an artist field. For example, during our Alter Ego project we have to produce an alter ego including their personality, demographic and emotions, with scamping I was able to show everyone my thought process of what I wanted my alter ego to be as a person. The sketches I drew in a way helped me to even progress with who I wanted my alter ego to be. I was able to visually show how I wanted her to look like, what her likes and dislikes were and how her backstory was built upon. Now having scamps of the key information of my alter ego I was even getting feedback from others which has helped me create an even more interesting backstory to her. A picture is a hundred words, a simple scamp can fully express your ideas instead of a mind map. I’m a visual learner and due to that scamping has given me the advancement of my ideas because with a sketch I can go back onto my first idea (which is never the best idea) and build onto it without having to worry about losing track on my thought process. Something that really got my attention was the strategy that Pixar uses, the fact that all their illustrators create their own type of scamping in a story board form and place them a huge board for all to see. Upon doing that everyone is able to critique everyone’s work and help others by bouncing off different ideas. I believe this is the best representation of the benefits of scamping, since hundred minds are better than just one, the illustrators have the advantage of seeing their own art work in different points of view in which they wouldn’t see themselves. So, over all scamping is useful tool.
