Can I ask, what are your thoughts on Reisi's obsession with the slate? Because to me, it shows the unhealthy and toxic aspects of his need for power. He may have good intentions for it (his own vision, that is) but, I feel he lacks the *specific* type of selflessness Gold and Silver clans have. Reisi's devotion to his cause comes from repressing himself and such self-righteousness leaves him frigid to see alternatives. This blog has helped me to understand his character, which is why I ask now
Ah, thank you so much for your kind words! Iāve missed K, and Iāve missed people talking to me about K. And I always miss Captain Glasses. <3
So, I wrote a little bit about this. You can search the tags forĀ āK Metaā andĀ āMunakata Reisiā to find the relevant posts. To summarize what Iāve written there, I think that Reisi likes power but that he doesnāt like power for powerās sake.Ā
One thing thatās clear throughout the series is that Munakata Reisi was always destined to be something great, and that he himself has been aware of this destiny and accepts it with little insecurity or hesitation. In Countdown and Case Files, Reisiās family is pretty clear that heās unusually brilliant. And in R:B, when Reisi is first crowned, the Gold King remarks on how easily Reisi accepted the mantle of the Blue King. Itās like heās always expected to be in power.Ā
I also think Reisi likes being in power. He enjoyed that little exchange with the Prime Minister in ROK when he takes over the duties of the Gold King. He enjoys bending things to his will. Heās fucking good at it, in fact.Ā
But let me be clear: I donāt think Reisi is selfish. In fact, I *do* think heās just as selfless as someone like Suoh Mikoto. The reason Reisi wants to maintain power is because he thinks he needs it to keep order. Now, you can disagree with him on that point (I do), but I donāt think that heās just some power-hungry tyrant. Itās that he trusts himself to be just and fair and maintain order, and he doesnāt really trust others. And after thinking about this, I honestly canāt blame him for not trusting other people, and other Kings in particular. Since heās been crowned, the following things have happened:
(1) The Gold King allowed someone to challenge his Blue Throne (detailed in Case Files).
(2) The Red King seems more interested in burning himself out than helping to keep the peace (detailed in S1). Donāt @ me, either, Suoh stans. I love Suoh Mikoto so fucking much, but letās be clear - he did cause more trouble for Reisi and for the Gold King. Letās not forget that the Blue and Gold Clans are responsible for running the whole of Japan. So the fact that Reisi not only has S4 to manage, but must also worry about Suohās Weissman Levels so he doesnāt *literally* go nuclear might make Reisi feel like not *everyone* should be trusted with power.Ā
(3) The Silver King abdicating his responsibility. Twice. Not only that, letās not forget that Shiro brought the Colorless King to be killed by Suoh - the *one* thing Reisi was trying to prevent because Reisi was trying to prevent *hundreds of thousands* of people being killed. Shiro absolutely knew what would happen if Mikoto killed Colorless and proceeded anyway. Again, one might argue that Shiro made the right decision because letting the Colorless King go on is worse than Mikoto going Damocles down. I donāt agree, but I donāt always get things right. The point is that Shiro expected to die after that and Reisi was the one who would have to clean up the mess.
(4) The Colorless King trying to devour everyone and gain more power for the sake of power.Ā
(5) The Green King trying to give everyone power, which as we saw in ROK led to widespread chaos.Ā
And this is in addition to everyday Strains and human nuisances. Since Reisi was crowned, heās been dealing with one high-powered nuisance after another. And so he *doesnāt* trust others to wield power, because they havenāt wielded it responsibly. He also *never* forgets what happened to the previous Red and Blue Kings. He knows heās one mistake from going nuclear - this is the moral of S:B, where he tells Zenjou that heās willing to put himself underĀ āheavenās decree,ā and when he brings Zenjou out from the file room in ROK.Ā
So I think Reisi likes having power, but I donāt think he likes having power just because he gets off on being powerful. I think he doesnāt trust anyone other than him to be responsible about how they use their power. Is this incredibly arrogant and short-sighted? Yes. History is littered with people with good intentions who pursue power at great cost to everyone around them. But letās be real: Apart from the Gold King (who dies before ROK), there doesnāt seem to be anyone other than Reisi who is capable of maintaining order in *all of Japan.* Remember that Japan is prosperous and peaceful because of the Slate System. Reisi wants to maintain that order at any cost.Ā
To maintain that order, I think he can be incredibly selfless - just as selfless as Mikoto, in fact. One of the points of ROK is to show that Reisi and Mikoto are more alike than either wants to admit. There are things both of them are willing to die for. Mikoto will die for his Clan, his family. Reisi will die to maintain order. His Sword was already damaged from killing Mikoto in S1 (which totally fucked him up, BTW). He further damaged it by taking over the Gold Kingās job and keeping the Slate in check, at great personal cost. Heās so exhausted in ROK that Awashima notices. And the *one* thing that *everyone* agrees about with respect to Reisi is that no one knows whatās up with him. The fact that Awashima gets a glimpse behind the mask is especially telling. Heās fucking wiped. And yet he continues to do his job.Ā
When heās removed from his leadership position, he decides to pursue justice on his own, not caring if it gets him killed. He goes to confront Jungle and the Grey King (the dude who kicked his ass) on his own because as he tells Yata, he cannot allow injustice to remain in this world.Ā So, in my mind, Reisi is incredibly selfless. And he definitely loves power, but I donāt think heās a tyrant. Heās just not warm and fuzzy, and heās written to be inscrutable, so I think that he gets a bad rep.Ā
