Ach Berlin.
I think there may have been some sort of liberal protest by mother nature in Berlin, because I'd say hailing is very anti-spring break. Pretty radical position but dippin-dot sized hail stones really made the anti-spring break message very clear. Berlin was sweet. Our hostel was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy themed? I've never read it but thats what I was told and there was a lot of paintings and memorabilia around the Heart of Gold Hostel. Even with the freezing temperatures hail, the four of us Terps were excited for our trip and were not going to let a little falling ice balls from the sky get us down. Hey, I survived walking home in Irene so I'd say I'm safe. The first day we got breakfast from the nicest german man right around the corner from our hostel. Super dad like, and basically had his nice little kitchen all right there and was very welcoming and warm and stuff. We learned quickly that the german language is hysterical. No offense, I mean my last name is as german as it gets, but its fucking hilarious. I would say things out loud just for a chuckle. So entertaining. Being my second time in Germany (I went to Cologne for Karnival) things were kind of familiarish-not-really-thats-a-big-lie. No but some things were ok, like I knew the basic jist of how confusing the underground and subway stations are. Yes, they have both. Its so redundant and just confusing. Anyways, we took a free tour and walked through the Jewish quarter, saw the unmarked Holocaust memorial. Then he walked us to a car park (parking lot) and pointed to a car and said so many meters below the ground under that car is where Hitler killed himself and his wife. A true anti-memorial. I was amazed at how realistic the German's were about their past and they didn't try to make any excuses. It was just history and terrible and bad and then followed by communism which was also bad but now they're recovered and thats that. and we all said great. Then we went to Charlie's Checkpoint and saw the remains of the Berlin Wall. After the tour the 4 of us walked down to see the East Side Gallery on the Berlin Wall. Simply amazing and beautiful modern art. (pics are on my facebook page in the Berlin album). At some point during those couple days we saw parliament and went to some bars with some brits we met. They didn't like Americans but insisted on hitting on us anyway, go figure. Whatever, I had a martini, so I was fine. lol. We also think that Doug got drugged. When we were having some drinks in the hostel bar before we went out, Doug went from zero to goner in like 5 seconds. So we can only conclude that someone was trying to get it, our first pick is the bartender. *shrug* What can ya do? The heart wants what the heart wants. LOL. ALSO in the great city of Berlin, at the greatest zoo in the world, THE Berlin Zoo, I saw with my very own eyes elephants having sex. It was the most shocking and impressive thing I've ever seen in front of my face. So, naturally I took a video and posted it on facebook for all the world to see. I cannot wrap my head around physics of that. so weird.... wow. ach berlin. Anyways, then after Berlin we took a lovely train to Prague. There are probably things I'm leaving out because this was 2 weeks ago but this is really just me bragging about my trip in excruciating detail, isnt it? I'll try not to sound like an asshole as I commentate on my gallivanting adventures.Â
