Hundreds of thousands of seals are killed primarily for their fur which is used to produce fashion garments. 97% of the seals killed are babies under 3 months of age. Sealskin processing plants deduct $2 from the price they pay for the skins for each bullet hole they find. This means that often, extremely cruel methods are used to kill the seals, in order to do minimal damage to the seal's skin. There are easy ways the Canadian government could shut down the hunt, such as a federal buyout or expanding marine ecotourism in the area. In the Magdalen Islands, one of Canada’s sealing area, seal watching now brings in more money to local communities than seal hunting does. The Canadian government also use tax payer’s money to contribute towards the seal hunt, with over $20 million in subsidies provided to the sealing industry between 1995 - 2001. Some fishing industry groups claim seals must be culled to protect fish stocks, blaming seals is a convenient way to divert attention from the fishing industry’s irresponsible and environmentally destructive practices.
