(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished the first two episodes of ‘War of the Worlds’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

As I watch the first 10 minutes of the show...I realise that there hasn't been a Sci-Fi show that has been able to grab my attention. I took the time to scan my TV rating list...and the ones that made it 5 and above....were mostly Comedy (The Good Place), Drama (Homeland), or a Mix (The Good Fight).
Is it because films lend more to be a better canvas for the genre?
What works is the pacing and casting. Slow burn pieces only work well when you don't mind staying with every character. At any point while watching Rectify...did I not want to skip ahead (except for graphic scenes). As much as I am smitten with Giri/Haji...there were scenes that I skipped due to the lack of screen presence of the performer (I believe that it is learned ---- similar to how Julie Ann Emery and Jeremy Shamos were able to bring Betsy and Criag Kettleman to life)
Could that have been the reason I stayed past the 10th minute? I'd like to say so...though...it did help that the point in time Howard Overman wanted to explore was quite absent in the film. There's also the fact that the film seemed to have ended the story abruptly (with the reason that the aliens couldn't survive the earth's microbes)...and the curiosity of how the writing team would handle it. Would we be able to witness the aliens finding a way to build immunity quickly?
