Ever wondered where I take all those panoramic shots from? ~ From up here, on top of the World! ~ When it comes to composing your photos, it's not just about lining it up and hitting the trigger. It should take careful thought, planning, and a big dose of creativity. ~ There are rules-of-thumb out there about image composition, like the Rule of Thirds - if you're coming on Safari this year or on our April 27th photo tour, you'll hear all about it - but it should come down to instinct from learned experiences and, a lot of the time, where you stand when you're holding the camera. ~ Anyone who's been on Safari, game drive or bush with me will know, it's all about where YOU are in relation to your photo. On Safari, I drive and park the vehicle 100% according to where you can get the best perspective in relation to our photo subjects... if you don't do this, you end up with dozens of shots of animal bums and bright light blasting right down your camera lens. It's crucial to get placement right. ~ There's also a huge element of understanding Ethology - that is, reading animal behaviour - if your guide can do this you've got a much better chance of being in the right place at the right time, and ready for the shot. It's even important to express what you want in photos to your guide, or understand them (including camera settings you'll need) prior to the shot moment occurring. ~ And, well, if it's ok to do so eg. if you're not disturbing wildlife, if you aren't setting a bad example around other guides or guests, and its safe to do so - ONLY in these situations should you climb on top of the truck for a better perspective. ~ Gear hint! The shoes you see in this photo are possibly my favourite pair of shoes of all time - sponsored for my 2018 guiding season by the incredible team at @sapmok in South Africa. If you want a comfy, all terrain, quiet pair of shoes, these are for you. Solid leather construction, and made to last! I put them through some absolutely insane conditions last year, and there's not a thing wrong with them!
