my mom's corned beef, sliced thick, on toasted potato bread with mayo and mustard. i could cook my own but it wouldn't be the same.
there used to be this sandwich shop on Cape Cod, in... Wellfleet maybe? they had a sub they called the JAWS. because it had bite, get it. rare roast beef with horseradish (onions optional) on french bread. used to grab one of these for lunch and eat on the beach.
verti marte, a corner store in the french quarter, aka the dirty verti; they're open 24/7 and their signature poboy is the "all that jazz": A medley of grilled ham, turkey and shrimp, Swiss, and American cheese accompanied by grilled mushrooms and tomatoes on grilled French bread with our "wow sauce". i get mine without the ham. the first time i ate one of these i fucking ascended.
manny's breakfast sandwiches, from a ny deli that no longer exists, rip. bacon egg and cheese on a toasted hard roll. (i was still eating pork when i lived there.) fairly certain there was heroin in the eggs. verti marte does a reasonable facsimile but the first time i asked for a hard roll the guy just stared at me and said "like... a dinner roll?" no, like a kaiser roll. "do you mean a bun?" okay, i guess i mean a bun.
this cheese sandwich i had in college, grilled mozzarella cheese on sunflower bread. i don't think it had ever occurred to me previously that i could make a grilled cheese with mozzarella, and it was so fucking good. 25+ years later now it's pretty much the only kind i eat. i like dave's killer bread, good seed variety + galbani mozz. magnificent.
