June 23rd: The House of Men
Last night we played a last minute basement show in Nashville, Tennessee. A friend of a friend who is now our friend, Colin, hosted us in his House of Men. We arrived at his door at 12am, weary travelers in the night. I, Maddy, peeked through the window before knocking on the from door, exclaiming that this looked like a college house. My image of Colin was a 56 year-old, white-haired, family man. It turns out he is one of 6 recent college graduates living in this large historic Nashville home. Our adventure in Nashville was filled with unexpected twists.
We shared the stage with Planet Plutoplayed a stripped down set of their rock music. During our show, we had hootin’ and hollerers, eye closers, movers and swayers, that’s how they danced. Our host Colin was rocking out, and determined to give us a full picture of Nashville culture. “Injecting it right into us.”
Nashville is house parties and smokey bars, rain and wind coming out of nowhere, chuva. I smell like it. Hair cut on the front lawn, Peter Gabriel music videos late at night. The best Karaoke bar in the country, perhaps. At Santa’s Pub they sell exclusively beer and wine coolers. Kate’s highlight: tattooed guy singing Mario’s “you should let me love you.” But can we talk about Hakuna Matata when two gentlemen perfectly replicated Simba’s aging scene as he walks across the log. Tonight we are Froomies of 516 Fairfax, tomorrow we head east to Asheville. The five of us moving as a wolf pack. “If you just let it do it’s thing, it’s good.” (JSWANN)
