As First Lady, Deal worked to improve literacy statewide by visiting schools in all of Georgia's 159 counties and 181 school districts to read to students. She was a mother of four children and a grandmother of six children. She and Nathan Deal have been married for 56 years. "As she will do for so many Georgians, Ms. Deal will remain steadfast in our hearts and memories, just as her family will be in our prayers at this time of pain," Kemp said. "As he awaits them in a larger world, we ask all Georgians to join us in celebrating his life and contribution to a grateful state."
