The proud daughter of teachers and a two-time graduate of what later became Georgia College & State University, she dedicated her professional life to pursuing the same career as her parents, raising Georgia's adolescent mind, only she was loved by her students but also an an influential force in theirs A life that not only leaves a mark on their minds, but also on their hearts. As First Lady, Deal worked to improve literacy statewide by visiting schools in all of Georgia's 159 counties and 181 school districts to read to students. She was a mother of four children and a grandmother of six children. She and Nathan Deal have been married for 56 years. "As she will do for so many Georgians, Ms. Deal will remain steadfast in our hearts and memories, just as her family will be in our prayers at this time of pain," Kemp said. "As he awaits them in a larger world, we ask all Georgians to join us in celebrating his life and contribution to a grateful state."
