Women in Mahabharata - Tapati
She is noted as a daughter of Surya (most probably a king from one of the solar dynasties).
One of Ajamidha and Dhoomini's grandsons, Raikshya Samvarana, upon seeing her roaming in a hilly area and falls in love with her. However, Tapati refuses to say yes without her father's approval, so Samvarana leaves his kingdom for a long time, immersed in efforts to please her father.
Finally, with Vashishtha's intervention, 'Surya' gives his permission.
After the wedding, Tapati and Samvarana take an extended vacation in the hills, leaving the administration of Hastinapura to his old prime minister.
Taking advantage of this lapse in security, Panchala's Paijavana Sudasa annexes the kingdom, forcing Tapati, Samvarama and their toddler son Kuru to retreat into the forest.
Under Vashishtha's guidance, only once Kuru grows into a young man is Samvarana finally able to conquer Hastinapura, as well as, Bharata's entire original territory, back from the late Sudasa's descendants Sahadeva and Somaka.
In Kuru's name two distinct regions are famous: Kurujangala and Kurukshetra. The name of his ancestral kingdom was also popularly renamed to Kuru-rashtra, alongside the entire lineage itself.
