“Esteemed One,” Sam bowed trying to cover up his shock at seeing him. “We found her wandering alone in the woods on the outskirts of Moonlight Falls.”
“Is she alright? Is Blossom with her? Conner? What about the guards?” One question after another flew from his lips. His daughter was alive. His heart raced with the knowledge “where is she? I want to see her.”
“She’s safe,” Sam explained “I left her at the cabin with Quentin while I checked out things here.” Pausing his eyes met the chiefs who nodded “we found the mother dead and the girl weeping over her body.”
“Blossom,” Adam murmured, processing the information best he could. Blossom had betrayed him when she stole his DNA to produce their child. He bore her no ill will; she had been under tremendous stress and following orders. She had been a good mother to Fawn. “I want her brought here before the elders realize she’s alive.”
“Sam and I will be going with the detail to bring her home,” The chief informed him.
“I’ll be going to town soon,” Sam announced as if that answered the boy’s questions. “I need to make sure you can defend yourself while I’m gone.”
Frowning Quentin stared at him a moment in silence. “Why can’t we all go?” his eyes narrowed “you know who she is don’t you?”
“She’s the Esteemed One’s daughter,” he moved to get up but something in the other man’s eyes kept him rooted to the seat. “It’s time for your lesson,” he added, expecting Quentin to nod and stand up like the obedient pup he was.
“Hold on a minute,” Quentin said, surprising them both. “What do you mean the Esteemed One’s daughter? Is she in danger? Are we? Wouldn’t it be better if we went together?”
Growling Sam lips lifted in a snarl “listen pup there are things you know nothing about. It’s your duty to shut up, listen and learn.”
“No,” he snapped, his voice brittle as glass, “it’s my fault. I should have stopped this before it got to this point. What you feel is gratitude not love. It will diminish over time when you are safe and no longer dependent upon me.”
Reaching for him Quentin’s encountered muscle as firm as stone. “It’s not like that. I know you feel it too. A connection. Why fight it?”
Turning he said gruffly “we should practice.” He walked towards the door as if nothing happened.
Perplexed and more than a little confused Quentin followed. Maybe if he could impress the man with his fighting skill if he couldn’t do anything else.
Yawning Quentin sniffed the air getting a read on where Sam and the girl were. It was still a little unnerving how his life had completely changed in such a short time. A few weeks ago he had thought werewolves were something the media made up to sell books and movies. The underdog who never got the girl because the vampire was oh so much cooler and mysterious.
Shaking his head dismissing the thoughts. His feet padded across the bare wood floor. Walking into the room he found Sam leaning against the fireplace. The sunlight shining through the windows hit the man’s face and he was struck with the man’s beauty. Quentin’s heart raced inside his chest, maybe this time the werewolf got his man he thought, dragging his eyes away from the beautiful man. He sat in one of the chairs glad that the man had come into his life when he needed saving.
“How’s the girl?” Sam asked, ignoring Quentin’s adoring gaze. Puppy love he thought. Nothing more than a passing thought driven by his desire and gratitude. He smirked watching the boy. He couldn’t deny the boy was pleasant to look at. He moved across the room to sit down.
“Sleeping,” he replied, getting up to sit next to Sam on the little couch. Their shoulders touched as they settled on it. “Do you think she’s alright? Shouldn’t we try to find her dad? Get a doctor? Something?”

Chest heaving beneath the angry glare of the older werewolf knowing he was crossing the lines. After a moment his eyes dropped and he bowed his head acknowledging Sam as his alpha. “I’ll do my best but I don’t understand.” Lifting his eyes to meet Sam’s, his heart almost stopped. He found himself getting lost in their beauty. His gaze dropped to the man’s lips and to his horror he found himself leaning forward to brush the man’s lips with his own. Time seemed to stop as he felt Sam respond to his kiss before he was pushed away from him and Sam was glaring down at him. Hanging his head, cheeks a deep red “I’m sorry.” Pressing a hand to his lips he could still feel the way Sam’s lips felt against his, the way he tasted, it was like every one of his senses had been linked to that kiss. Looking up “did I do something wrong?”
“My name” he repeated “is Quentin not kid.” This time when he spoke there was less fear and more irritation. “What did you expect? A tantrum?”
“Something like that” he admitted sitting back “it’s not every day you tell someone they’re going to become a werewolf.”
Struggling to sit up Quentin hissed as his wounds protested at the movement. “I don’t see how whining is going to help. If it meant I wouldn’t become a werewolf well then I’d throw a royal fit.” He gave his companion a searching almost hopeful look.
“Sorry kid it’s not going to help” he reached over giving him a hand up “We should be going before the pack returns.”
