Main Characters
Gregor: The main protagonist of the story undergoes his transformation so calmly that it’s absurd and sets the tone for the rest of the story. Even though Gregor is useless to his family as a bug, he is able to reflect positively on his condition and reflect on his existence in ways that he would never have had time for as a salesman. Ultimately his lack of utility leads to his demise even though it was the only way for him to escape the pressures of his family.
Grete: Gregor’s sister undergoes her own transformation as well from a little girl who needs protection and to be provided for into confident and self serving woman. She cares for Gregor enthusiastically at first since she gets to be the one providing for him but as soon as she has to start working in the day and studying at night, Gregor just becomes and a chore. Ultimately, Gregor ruining her playing the violin caused her to reject him entirely.
Mr.Samsa: Gregor’s father is forced to change from a vegetating unemployed bum into a bank messenger with a renewed authority and vigor. He rejects anything Gregor does as only something with bad intentions and leaves him with an apple in his back to show his disdain.
Mrs.Samsa: Gregor’s mother wants to protect him even though she can’t bear to look at her insect son and even stops her husband to save Gregor’s life.
