Album of the Day 9/26/17

“Floral Shoppe” - Macintosh Plus [Vektroid]

Yes, Album of the Day is back! I’m getting seriously fast at sorting them in my library into playlists, so much so that I actually complete one a day, so why not! I’ll share a short opinion and score and let you guys know what I think.

Anyway, “Floral Shoppe” is widely known as the birth of the genre of Vaporwave, a sub-genre of Plunderfonics (sample-based music). This is a good album. It isn’t fantastic, but it’s really, really good. I quite like it. The last track on the album (海底 (Seabed)) is just terrible. Like… So bad. It only really works when you listen to the record and it’s the end piece. The penultimate track (月 (Moon)) is a much better ending, but I understand why Macintosh Plus wanted to have it be the ending track. Vaporwave is known for its ominous sense of calm, after all.

The real treasures of this album are towards the front end, with incredible tracks like “ブート(Booting)”, which take the sample 80’s& 90’s R&B and pop tracks and transform them into eerie and immersive tunes.

The second track, “リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー (Lisa Frank 420 / Modern Computing)”, is the most famous Vaporwave track that exists. It’s well earned as well, as it is a better song than the sample it originates from in every respect (that being Diana Ross’ “It’s Your Move”). It’s a slow, interesting R&B experiment, and has been the subject of many a meme. The views of the audio video on YouTube is about 31 million, to give you an idea of the popularity.

In conclusion, “Floral Shoppe” is an excellent introduction to the genre of Vaporwave, although it is nowhere near its best offering. Still, about half of the album makes incredible use of the samples utilized, and it is worth your time.
