Why Small Government Is a Failed Utopia | The Toxic Myth of Minarchism & Why Nations Succeed
Is a "small government" truly the ultimate catalyst for absolute freedom and economic prosperity? If so, why does every single successful nation across the globe today operate as a "big government" or a Leviathan-like state?
In this video, we shatter the romanticized illusions of neoliberalism and conservatism by examining the real-world reality of the Sama-Bajau—Southeast Asia's stateless maritime nomads [0:01:01, 0:04:09]. While they perfectly embody the hands-off, laissez-faire economy envisioned by right-wing theorists, their actual survival reveals a starkly different truth [0:04:09, 0:05:22]. From the tribal waters of the Coral Triangle to the ancient founding myths of Thebes, we explore why "covenants without the sword are but words" and how violence, institutions, and consensus form the true bedrock of state-building [0:01:05, 0:08:08, 0:12:05].

Baker’s Dozen: Going Back Home
In our Baker’s Dozen feature we highlight photographs we love that didn’t quite make the Daily Dozen.
This photo is truly a sight to see. A life lived on the water in Semporna, Malaysia. We see images of places like this often, actually, but there are two elements that make this one more special to me. The images we see are often houses on a river, the house may be built over water but the edge of the land is near by and often in the frame. Though I am sure the land’s edge is not far out of this frame as well, removing it adds a wonderful mood to the image. The second rather obvious element: the child center frame. To see a person wading through the shallow water provides a real sense of the life style of the Sama Bajau people. This photo opens my eyes to a new, beautiful part of our world.
