I feel like I could spend all day writing essays about iontbo but will anyone care lmfao
I love so much that the final episode in Strangers from Hell was called gaslighting because the whole time I was watching the show that was one of the most prominent themes for me.
The way Jong Woo is, at every turn, told by literally everyone that his perception of the world is incorrect. Except for Jung Hwa (the only person with both sanity & brains in this whole show) no-one else gives him the time of day when he shares his problems whilst at the same time acknowledging that he’s becoming different since he arrived in Seoul.
It was so heartbreaking to watch because of how well it was done. The people who cared for him/were in positions to look out for him (gf, boss, seniors, landlady, Mun Jo his “normal” neighbour) all failed him by rejecting his worries & worldview and insisting their version of events was correct. The people who didn’t (residents, his supervisor) actively harassed him in big and small ways, completely unprovoked to drive him into a corner.
So ultimately he had no-one to turn to and rejected the one person who tried, because by that point he was both too afraid and also probably too convinced she wouldn’t be able to do anything to fix his problems either.
A really well done story about the way it’s not the huge obvious things but the smaller, constant things can wear down a person’s psyche.
It happened to Jung Hwa to a lesser extent by the way all her colleagues kept downplaying all of her (very correct) suspicions which is probably why she hallucinated Mun Jo at the end. It might be a hint that she’s fated down a similar road to madness, especially as she (again correctly) suspects Jong Woo is the killer but obviously no-one will believe her.
Anyway this doesn’t really have a conclusion. The show was very well written and I’ve seen plenty of people talk about the hell is other people aspect, so I thought I’d mention the gaslighting which was also huge imo.
I guess, just be mindful with the people you interact with! Obviously the likelihood of us encountering serial killers is low, but we will always find people who see the world differently to us or suffer mental health problems that are invisible to us so we should always try not to outright dismiss someone’s perspective.
Likewise we’ll all go through life with people trying to gaslight & downplay our own world views so it’s important to be able to tell the difference between genuine concern & the faux kind so we’ll reach out to people like Jung Hwa & not people like Mun Jo or the boss.
ugh I’d be so much more invested in TOTNT if the second leads were the main leads...
I just don’t care about the main couple? Which is definitely a writing problem bc I LOVE both actors and they clearly have chemistry but their story arcs & romance are just *snooze*
I haven’t watched since ep 8 & I’m honestly torn whether to drop or continue on bc the second leads really have captured my heart
I was actually planning on beginning Start Up now that 18 Again is finishing
Well I’m not anymore!!
The way all the shipping discourse I keep seeing has put me off it entirely lmfao
Nothing wrong with everyone enjoying that ofc, but love triangles is a trope I’d like to fire into the sun and despite other possible cute things, it seems that is the bulk of the story here...
A shame as the entire main cast is pretty much up my alley!
