     I had class tonight. Advanced Creative Writing—Fiction, with Mr. Ellerbee. We were going to be doing feedback and critiques with out writing groups tonight. I was nervous, because I wasn’t totally sure about the direction my short story was going, and there were a couple really great writers in my class that really intimidated me. The instructor seemed to like my prose style, though, so that was something I had going for me.

     The class was a lark, on one hand, and a genuine attempt to learn the craft, on the other. I didn’t want to solve mysteries forever, and I had a lot of good stories that I’d accrued in my short life. Too many, in fact.

     It was hard to concentrate on just one. For instance, I’d really like to tell you about my time as a private contractor with Greywall, and the circumstances that led to both my retirement from that line of work and my exile from the nation of Zimbawarre, but I’m writing about this other story about disappearing teenagers right now. Maybe I’ll get to that other one sometime. It’s a pretty good one!

     So, Tricia Peters wanted to talk about a case! I tried to remember the details of her face and/or body, because, let’s face it: I’m single and I don’t get a lot of play with the ladies. I recall her being not unpleasant to look at, unlike myself. I also recall her being married, but for the purposes of this mental exercise, that was irrelevant. She had a certain welcoming roundness about her. She wasn’t fat by any stretch, but she wasn’t emaciated, either. I wasn’t really paying much attention because my focus was on Leonard Berby at the time, but—

     Goddamnit, there was that throb in my head, again! What the fuck? It wasn’t quite as persistent as it had been following Berby’s disappearance, but it was still there, triggered, seemingly, by merely thinking about him.

     This was concerning. Had somebody screwed with my head?

     I tried to remember exactly what I had seen the times those kids had shimmered out of existence in front of me. The more I tried to think on it, the more the throb thudded through my brain. It was as if there was a force, in my head, convincing me to not think about these cases.

     Suddenly, I hit the brakes and pulled the car over on the highway. The throb hit a high intensity. I pressed my hands against my temples, squeezing my eyes shut, and something hit me: a crystalline realization: I had experienced this same throb the first two times.

     These were not random, weird happenings.

     Somebody was doing something to me.

     Somebody was responsible for this.

     Cars raced past. Somebody honked at me. One of my tires was still peeking out into the lane. Fuck him.

     Sorry to inconvenience you, sir, but I just realized that somebody is fucking with the way my brain functions.

     And that wasn’t okay with me.

     “No, thanks. I’ll take the 25. It stops at the corner right outside and drops me off like two blocks from home. Kinda nice.”

     I dropped the plate and fork in the sink. “Where, uh…where is home, right now?” I looked over at her, saw her expression turning sour.

     “Are you asking for fun, or for my mom?”

     I leaned back up against the sink and folded my arms. “When, exactly, would I have spoken to your mother?”

     “I assume you do, occasionally, right? Family stuff, whatever…”

     “We haven’t talked in around nine months.”

     “Shit! That’s a long time!”

     “Yeah.”

     “You should talk to your sister!”

     “How long has it been for you?”

     She twirled a finger in her hair mock-innocently. “Over a year?”

     I levelled a steady gaze. “You should talk to your mother.”

     “It ain’t easy, Sam,” she said with a sigh.

     I barked a rueful laugh. “Yeah. With her, it never is.”

  I had four sisters, three older, one younger. Louise was the product of my oldest. Us kids were all born within a seven-year span of time, which meant that our mother was really busy, uncomfortable and miserable for a long, steady stretch. Dad, you see, wanted a boy, and when he didn’t get one he went right back to work making another. Took him four tries, and then when he tried for a second son, he got another daughter instead. He gave up on the entire process after that, and soon after, mom was dead. Dad lost interest in a lot of things then, parenting most of all.

     Ellen, Louise’s mother, she…well. She blamed me for a lot. She blamed me for mom’s death. Hell, I blamed myself for mom’s death, but Ellen had never treated me the same after that family road trip. With my other sisters (Julia, the youngest, most of all), I had relationships that could best be described with varying levels of warmth, but Ellen, apparently, as the oldest child, considered herself the keeper of mom’s memory, and she would never let me forget a moment of childish carelessness. She would never let me forget the day I killed our mother.

     Now, she never said anything. Not directly. No, she insinuated, she suggested, she said a million words with silence and crossed arms, with a cleared throat and a tight smile. Her obvious dislike for me blossomed into a dislike for other members of the family, and they responded, frequently, with their own dislike. She nurtured grudges and fomented feuds. She still sent out Christmas cards every year, but the messages she wrote in them grew progressively more terse over the years until she was now just scribbling a signature in the bottom of the card after the printed “Happy Holidays” message.

     Her husband left. Her two kids moved out as early as they could manage it.

     She was the most unhappy person I had ever met, and I had no idea how to cure her. She’d been building her wall for a long time; there was no tearing it down.

     Anyway.

     I had no idea if she even knew Louise was working for me, or if she’d even care.

     “You’ve gone into a trance,” Louise said.

     I blinked, shook my head, and smiled. “Sorry. Just…just thinking. I wonder what that woman’s going to want me to do?”

     “Romance her and take her away from all this?”

     “Doubtful.” I walked for the door. “Lock up when you leave.”

     “Always do.”

     “Later.”

     “What? I hate it when you do that! It sounds like the ceiling is going to fall on me.”

     “Call Ms. Whatever-her-name…” I looked at the paper. “…Peters! Call her back and arrange an appointment.”

     “For when?”

     “For whenever the hell she wants to meet. My schedule is open.”

     “Now?”

     “Call her back? Yes, now! Now would be good!”

     “I turned it down, fuck, stop yelling!”

     “Do you need this piece of paper back?”

     “No, she’s in the call log.”

     “We have a call log?”

     “Yes, on the phone! You are so old! Now shut up so I can dial! And buy a goddamn intercom! This shouting is bullshit!”

     I shut up, as ordered. I filed away the mail, most of it into the round wire basket next to my desk. I liked to keep a clean office space. If you looked around my little cube, you’d find nothing out of place, or even very much in place. There wasn’t a lot up here, just my desk (modern, empty but for a computer) a bookshelf with some reference materials, and a plant in the corner that Louise watered, because she insisted on having “something alive in here”. My apartment was the same way. I didn’t carry a lot of material baggage through life. Mental baggage was a different story.

     I clicked on a folder on my computer’s desktop labelled “Active Cases”. It popped up and I found two folders in there, one marked “10th Place Shoplifter," and the other, “Pryce—Skateboarding Purse-Snatcher." I added a new folder, which I named, “Leonard Berby.”

     I told myself I was going to give up on things all the time, but I wasn’t very good at it. I looked at the three open cases, the three kids who went “whoosh!” before my unbelieving eyes, and that annoying arrhythmic throb assaulted my head again. Aspirin in the desk drawer. I popped three pills, swallowed them dry. Yuck.

     I knew I’d be back on the Leonard Berby case soon. Things tended to worry away at me until I got back on the horse. This one was particularly problematic, because it was the one that established the pattern. One disappearing kid could be a trick of the light. Two could be a coincidence. Three meant either I was going crazy or something seriously weird was going down in my city.

     I would have to figure out which one, and soon.

     I didn’t spend a lot of time in the office. I only kept it because folks tended to trust you more if you had one. It made you seem legit. The only reason I really ever went there was to check the mail and, every now and then, talk to a client. Also, to check on my sole employee.

     On Front Avenue, on the north side of the river, there was an originally upscale but now slightly run-down and uncool bank of lofts. They overlooked the river and were still expensive to rent, but since a hip new building with an even better view had opened up down river, nearer the rich part of town, and since, coincidentally, I had helped reunite the building owner with his runaway daughter, I got an embarrassing break on my rent. I won’t mention it, because it’s embarrassing and I don’t want to brag, but any other tenant would probably murder me if they knew the details.

     I heard her music, some emo indie-rock stuff, through the door before I opened it. Some overly earnest fellow was singing about his “wounded knees” or some goddamn thing. I sighed and opened the door. “Afternoon, Louise!” I shouted.

     The loft, as were they all, was long and narrow. The floors were hardwood. One end was a large window, split into eight panes, through which the river, the buildings of downtown, and the gray, rain-specked sky were visible. The ceilings were tall, so I had split half the room into two levels and put my desk upstairs, accessible via an iron spiral staircase I acquired in a complicated series of transactions I don’t want to get into here. There was a kitchenette and a bathroom at my end, and underneath my level, feet up on her desk, eating Chinese take-out and ignoring me, was Louise. “How are you today?” I shouted again.

     She did not look up. She was staring intently at her computer monitor as she clicked the mouse. Her only acknowledgement of my entry was to slowly raise her right hand and extend her middle finger. “Lovely! Turn it down, please!”

     Louise smirked, then clicked the music down three levels. It was still loud, and still earnest indie-rock crap, but it was tolerable.

     (A quick interjection to address the fact that I live in a shithole and work out of a fancy loft that I rarely visit. Yes, I know. I know. It’s all about presentation and perception. Clients can see my office. Nobody saw my apartment. Nobody. I was a man of simple, and private, needs.)

     I walked over to the kitchenette and the various bags and boxes there. “Anything here for me?”

     “I didn’t know you were stopping by, dumbass, but you can have some of the pork and green beans, if you want. Oh, there’s a little bit of rice in there, too.”

     I pawed through the offerings. “And a pot sticker,” I observed.

     “Touch that pot sticker and I will fucking stab you.” Louise was 17, a high school dropout, and my niece.

     “What’s the news?”

     I dished some rice and pork onto a plain white plate. The food was still kinda hot, so I skipped the microwave. I grabbed a fork out of the dishrack next to the sink.

     “There’s a huge pile of mail up there on your desk.” She waved a hand skyward. “You haven’t been by in six days, dude. However, you may already have won a shopping spree at Monk’s Furniture for Less, so that’s something, right?”

     I walked for the spiral. “Have I ever told you what an aid to my business you are here, Louise?”

     “No.”

     I ate a forkful. “Oh, okay. Good.”

     “Go fuck your mother, Sam.”

     “Go fuck yours.” I settled down to, indeed, a huge pile of mail.

     “Dude. Gross. She’s like, even older than you, and my mom.”

     “What are you going to do if I win this shopping spree?”

     “Get a new desk chair, this one sucks. Oh! Hey, you got a phone call!”

     “When?”

     “Yesterday. I took a message. Wanna hear it?”

     “Either turn your music down or come up here! I’m tired of shouting!”

     “Grr! You are such a baby!” She turned the music down another two clicks, then I heard the fierce stomping of her Chuck Taylors on the stair. Louise was slender and pale. She had brown hair worn long in no particular style. Her black tee-shirt read, “END TIMES,” for some reason that escaped me. With it she wore a grey pinstripe vest, unbuttoned, and yoga pants pulled up to her knees. It was a look that defiantly didn’t give a shit. She held a little pink slip of lined note paper.

     “I said or,” I said with a heroic attempt to conceal a smirk.

     I had asked a few questions of the proprietor (who brought it in, if he was a regular customer, etc.), but he just waved his hairy forearms and said, “It was a guy, I dunno, people drop off crap all day,” which was pretty much what I was expecting. He probably knew more, but you know what? I was done with this case. It wasn’t even a case. I was just doing a favor for an old lady I liked. Kids who didn’t exist where they were supposed to was not my area.

     Ouch.

     Also, when I though about it, my head throbbed again, which was starting to irritate me.

     Ms. Speck answered her door after he customary minute-and-a-half wait while she slowly climbed to her feet, leashed her dog, put on pants, whatever old ladies do, and I heard the chain lock draw back before I saw her wary face. Poor lady: she’d never been afraid of anything, and now she was nervous about answering her door. “Yes?” She shifted her gaze up to me, and she lightened. “Oh! Hello, Sam. What’s that you have there?” she asked with a tentative smile.

     “Well,” I said, holding it up, “I hope this is yours, because this won’t go anywhere in my place.”

     She lit up, as I knew she would. She clapped her hands together, then waved me inside. Her apartment was much as you would imagine it if you met her on the street: tiny, dark, and filled with afghans, doilies, dolls and lingering smells of terrible cooking.

     Well, maybe you wouldn’t imagine the terrible cooking smells.

     “It goes over here, dear boy.” She pointed to a spot in the cramped dining room that was a noticeably bare patch on a wall filled with framed photographs and assorted doodads and gewgaws. A lonely nail presented itself. I put the clock in its place, and I imagined a contented sigh. I brushed my hands, looked to Ms. Speck, and I saw that her eyes were shining. “Thank you so much.” She came over to me, the little old lady from somewhere in Europe with the slight hunch and the little dog always underfoot. She embraced my torso warmly.

     Right.

     The second time it happened, a week later, with a skateboarder and purse-snatcher named Pryce, it was in full day light in the middle of a large, open area, and there was no way I could have misinterpreted what occurred.

     And now, about two-and-a-half months later, Leonard Berby pulls the same trick.

     Now we have a trend. A trend of young thieves pulling Houdinis, in public, and not being noticed by anybody but me, while I was chasing them. That was weird; that didn’t fit into my worldview. That was not the way things worked. I had a headache thinking about it.

     Really, right now, I had a headache. A real screamer. I walked back to the mall, away from the wailing truck, and sat down on one of those benches I’d hopped earlier. I blinked and rubbed my forehead. There was this pain throbbing through my frontal lobe. It was throbbing at a pace asynchronous with my pulse, which freaked me out a little bit because I didn’t usually get headaches (which was a miracle considering how often I’d been hit in the head), but in my experience, when I did, they throbbed with the pulse, not in whatever rhythm they fancied.

     This day had started out promisingly, but turned quickly into crap. I was going to have to hunt Leonard Berby down all over again, and this time, he was going to be a lot more difficult to find. It was a fair bet he wouldn’t be showing up to BJ’s Psychic Gifts again. Guys like that took and dropped jobs like changing underwear. I could get his address from BJ’s, but I would be surprised if he went back there, either.

     Yep, I’d mucked this up but good.

     I sat and rubbed my head until the weird throbbing subsided

     Fuck it. Enough with disappearing petty thieves. My job was pretty straightforward: you got a mystery to solve, and I solved it. I was a solver. What I was not was a guy who got involved in a bunch of bizarre-ass stuff like ghost teens or whatever. No. That was not my business. This was not my business.

     As for Ms. Speck, well…that cuckoo clock would show up in one of the local pawn shops in a couple days, certainly. Problem solved. See? I’m a solver.
