Try And Stay Alive || Salsia & Lareasa & Torque
The fire burned close the ground that night, a weak, pitiful imitation of the real thing as Torque sought to keep the flames out of sight of any of the Knights in the surrounding area. Usually he wouldn’t have bothered with such a risky move, but the bite of winter was settling in, and despite the relatively warm days, the nights were starting to plunge to freezing depths.Â
He built a sort of cove around the flame, both the keep it from dying out, as well as the keep the flickering away from prying eyes. The smoke he sent deep into the earth, constructing a small tunnel beside it in which the smoke was encouraged to drift into. All in all, he was pleased with his handiwork and was confident he’d make it through at least the next few hours undetected. After that, well, it was time for him to move on anyway.
Whilst the main forces had fought around the city, Torque had found himself with the distasteful task of being a mere scout. In the more rational part of his mind he understood that this was a dangerous task- discovering and mapping out the locations of the Knight camps as well as nearby reinforcements was no easy task, especially if they were to do it without being seen. However, Torque simply could not reconcile the fact that they had drawn him out of the thick of the battle and into something that theoretically any old student could do.
“Trust issues, the lot of them… bloody pretentious pricks…” he muttered under his breath as he drew a well-worn map out of a small rucksack. “Three camps to the north, and a smaller company to the east…” He counted the number of camps on his fingers, making sure he’d transcribe exactly what he remembered. “We’ll have to send a force to surround the North, flank them, and then overpower the smaller one…” He traced the dark lines briefly before turning back to rummage for something to pencil in the new troops he’d spotted. And that’s when he noticed it. He’d had three maps along with him, each designed for a different purpose, placed together in a specific order. They had been aligned perfectly when he’d last removed them. They were currently not.
Torque narrowed his eyes slightly, continued in the pretence of getting a pencil and making no move to indicate that he’d noticed anything out of order. Then he heard it. It was barely noticeable, could have been mistaken for the wind rustling the leaves. But the area was silent the sound of foliage was remarkably different from the hiss of fabric or the thud of feet. He does not waste time, the ground opening around him as the cracks speed towards their target, seeking to trap the unknown intruder.
