Saudi - Forts
Today we stopped at several forts. These forts were used over and over with modifications over centuries by a variety of civilizations.
The first was the Za'abal right in Sakaka. Most of the current castle is about 400 years old, but there was one there in Nabateaen times a millennia ago.
At the site there was also a Nabateaen well and cave home.
The Nabateaens were great at carving rocks and finding and managing water.
The we went to Dumat al Jandal where there are the ruins of the more substantial Marid Castle and the Al Dar'i Quarter surrounding an oasis.
The original fort was Nabateaen, of course, but was remodeled and enlarged many times. The surrounding settlement dates as far back as 1,000 BC.
It was used on into Islamic times so there is the Umar mosque too dating to the 7th Century, not long after the founding of Islam.
