@wolfstarmicrofic Pride prompt 18 - Lesbian [word count 617]
Sirius had a problem. A big problem. He was in love. Well, that in itself wasn't the actual problem, the problem was who he was in love with. Because it was a boy, and even when he managed to ignore years of his parents' muttering how two men in love was an abomination, a muddening of the blood (after all, there was a reason why his uncle Alphard had been blasted off the family tapestry and his portrait burned by Walburga in the fireplace), there was another problem. Sirius was in love with one of his best friends. And even when he forced himself to believe Remus could feel the same there was yet another problem. Because Sirius had a girlfriend.
And now he was looking at her coming down the dorm stairs, her dark red coat matching her lipstick and he had red roses in his hands that matched as well. A perfect couple from the outside. And it was Valentine's. Really, he couldn't have picked a worse day.
"You look stunning," he still said when she got closer because that was very true anyway.
"Thanks, lover," Mary smiled, taking the roses. "You're not so bad yourself. Shall we go?"
She took his arm and they walked out of the Common Room, Sirius doing his best to ignore the fact Remus was looking at them from one of the tables. Mary babbled about anything and nothing all the way to Madam Puddifoot's until they were shown to a small table with a lace curtain sheltering them from prying eyes. Sirius looked down at the menu and suddenly felt nauseous.
"I have to tell you something," he blurted out right at the moment Mary said the exact same thing.
He stared at her for a second before his upbringing reared its head.
"Ladies first," he smiled.
"Thank you, if I don't tell you right now I think I'm going to throw up," Mary took a deep breath. "First of all I want you to know that none of this is because of you, it's just something I always was and tried to bury really deep but I can't do that anymore. And it's not fair to lie to you, especially when you're such a great boyfriend."
Sirius leaned closer as she swallowed and avoided his gaze.
"I'm a lesbian," she said.
Sirius blinked. Then he blinked again. Then he stopped to consider how appropriate it would be to start laughing out of sheer relief and realised it really wasn't a good idea. So he took her hands.
"I'm so happy you told me, Mary," he smiled. "Thank you for trusting me."
"Of course not, I-" Sirius swallowed. "I actually wanted to tell you I realised I'm gay."
Mary stared at him, then she snorted and seconds later they were laughing so much they ended up sobbing under the outraged stares of the Cupid-shaped decorations.
"So, who is she?" Sirius asked when he could remember how to breathe. "If you've already set your sights on a lady, that is."
"It's Lily," Mary blushed, then winked at him. "Remus will be overjoyed when you tell him."
"You really didn't notice how he looks at you? Oh, he's as gone for you as you're for him!"
Something was lifted from Sirius's chest at that, and he smiled.
"Shall we at least have a hot chocolate before we go back?" he asked. "To celebrate our breakup and coming out."
"Absolutely. And we'll need a sugar intake before we tell the actual people we're in love with."
Sirius nodded and waved down the waiter through the lace. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad Valentine's day after all.
